“A joy to read.” (Douglas Stone and Sheila Heen, authors of Difficult Conversations)

“Like having a negotiation coach in your corner...giving you the courage to ask for more.” (Linda Babcock, author of Women Don’t Ask)

Ask for More shows that by asking better questions, you get better answers - and better results from any negotiation.

Negotiation is not a zero-sum game. It’s an essential skill for your career that can also improve your closest relationships and your everyday life, but often people shy away from it, feeling defeated before they’ve even started. In this groundbreaking new book on negotiation, Ask for More, Alexandra Carter - Columbia law professor and mediation expert who has helped students, business professionals, the United Nations, and more - offers a straightforward, accessible approach anyone can use to ask for and get more.

We’ve been taught incorrectly that the loudest and most assertive voice prevails in any negotiation, or otherwise both sides compromise, ending up with less. Instead Carter shows that you get far more value by asking the right questions of the person you’re negotiating with than you do from arguing with them. She offers a simple yet powerful 10-question framework for successful negotiation where both sides emerge victorious. Carter’s proven method extends far beyond one “yes” and instead creates value that lasts a lifetime.

Ask for More gives you the tools to bring clarity and perspective to any important discussion, no matter the topic.

Amazing questions to navigate negotiations

I really enjoyed listening to this book. The 10 questions provide an excellent framework for understanding the problem, needs, fears and concerns, and prior skills that can be used as you work to develop first steps and move forward. Whether you are pursuing a personal goal, trying to get a team on the same page, resolving a conflict, trying to understand a toddler's meltdown, or just trying to navigate the relationships in your life, this book is a go to resource.

We get it, you went to Columbia Law School

I tried so hard to get through this book. If you’re thinking about going into mediation this book could be helpful. I was hoping for something more sales focused and more negotiation focused. Definitely not what I was expecting. Could be a fun drinking game… Take a shot every time she mentions that she went to Columbia Law school. You’ll be pretty drunk by chapter 2, though...

Heady

I hate to be negative but this book is so complicated and heady. I just listened to the whole thing and all I got was, listen after asking a question and ask ‘tell me about ____.’ I’ll try listening to it again but honestly really disappointed. I don’t know what it was about it, I just couldn’t understand what she was saying. The only thought that came to my head was ‘too high minded’

A Lesson On Relationship Mastery

The author shares stories for both context and application of the principles and questions for use in simple and effective ways. While the basis of the book was not earth-shatteringly new information, the importance of structure in relation to the psychology of people and relationships was a huge learning lesson for me. Anyone looking to improve relationships and never compromise with a feeling of loss should read this book.

Great book with structure and tips for everyday application

I enjoyed all the chapters of this book. The storyline flows smoothly and provides a clear structure that could apply to career development or personal relationship negotiations. It emphasizes the relevance of listening and asking questions instead of trying to force our preferred outcome. Highly recommended!
