Publisher's summary

Apollo is the behind-the-scenes story of an epic achievement. Based on exhaustive research that included many exclusive interviews, Apollo tells how America went from a standing start to a landing on the moon at a speed that now seems impossible. It describes the unprecedented engineering challenges that had to be overcome to create the mammoth Saturn V and the facilities to launch it. It takes you onto the gantries at Cape Canaveral and behind the consoles of Houston's Mission Control as it relives the tragedy of the fire on Apollo 1, the first descent to the lunar surface, and the rescue of Apollo 13.

A story of daring bordering on recklessness on the ground and life-and-death decisions made in seconds during the flights, Apollo captures the drama of humans leaving Earth for the first time.

Awesome

I worked at NASA for 5 years in the 80s. The book recreates all the feelings that a NASA engineer experiences but at a much higher intensity.

Great book for anyone wanting the real history of Apollo and what it took to land a man in the moon.

Great insight into the Apollo programme

A thoroughly enjoyable recounting of the Apollo programme, from the early 60's through to the final Apolo flight, Apollo 17

The Real Story

All the brilliant books and movies and miniseries they have been produced put a lot of focus on the astronauts and deservedly so, but “Apollo” is the story of what it really took to get to the moon. Saying it’s the backstory is to not give the people involved their due...it is the story, period. And it’s beautifully rendered.

Engineers, you must hear this.

If you work in any engineering profession, this will be the most exciting book you have ever heard. It describes in some degree of technical detail the most spectacular and successful engineering project of our lifetimes. At crucial points in missions, it incorporates dialog from the ground controllers and astronauts to give you the feeling of being there. Beyond technicalities, it covers the people involved in the entire enterprise from design, management and control, giving you a sense of what it was like to work with them. It captures the excitement of a young organization of highly competent engineers doing the best work of their careers on a project that fired their imaginations. It will fire yours.
