Tiles designed to protect the ship from the blowtorch burn of reentry were missing from the heat shield. If the damage to Columbia was too great, the astronauts wouldn't be able to return safely to Earth. NASA turned to the National Reconnaissance Office, a spy agency hidden deep inside the Pentagon whose very existence was classified. Crazy but true

The Shuttle is America's longest manned space program. This is one of the best histories of the early days of the shuttle. Great work by the author and narrator does a fantastic job. For space enthusiasts this is a must.

Amazing book

This book tape was well read and covered the greatest test flight ever and demonstrates that the early shuttle pilots are the direct descendants of the Chuck Yeager era test-pilots.

I learned some things I didn’t know

I really enjoyed this book. I remember as a kid watching Columbia lift off the pad the first time. It was great learning about all the details of the shuttle’s development in this book as well as unpublished details about STS 1’s flight we didn’t know back then.

This is a great book. It tells a powerful story of the orbiters and their crews. One of the best space program books I have read.

Remember the Glory

The space program has been a part of my whole life. I waited for hours in front of our black and white TV for man’s first step on lunar soil. I watched Columbia’s maiden lift off. I drove out to Edwards Air Force Base and camped overnight to witness Columbia’s return home. I cried when the missions of Challenger and Columbia ended in disaster. Into the Black vividly brought back all the memories of the many, many successes and couple of failures of the glory years of the space program. The epilogue was very emotional for me. The space program with everyone working together made America great. This book is very well written and read. I couldn’t put it down. I’m going to listen to it again.

Great story about an amazing spacecraft.

Now America needs to honor the space shuttle and her crews with the next American space flight vehicle. MAGA

Good Story, Weak Narrator

Terrific narrative of the very fascinating story of everything leading up to the first shuttle flight. You will learn a great deal about the early beginning of the Shuttle program and what it took to get her off the ground. In those terms, this is a very satisfying book. The narrator, however, was infuriating as he made every astronaut he was quoting sound like a total podunk redneck goober. The men who flew the shuttle, the incredible X-15 and trained for the Air Force's MOL program were brilliant, insightful and courageous individuals. They deserved to be treated better than they were by the narrator of this book.

Fascinating insights into to AF/Shuttle connection

This great book brought me back to Mr Brown's 8th grade science class, waiting for the first shuttle landing. I remember how worried everyone was about the tiles. Now I know the rest of the story. After a career in the intel world, it's eye opening to learn the deep connections between NASA and the NRO and AF leading to the shuttle program and on that first historic mission. I also hadn't realized how many of the AF MOL astronauts wound up as shuttle astronauts.
