Publisher's Summary

Apollo is the behind-the-scenes story of an epic achievement. Based on exhaustive research that included many exclusive interviews, Apollo tells how America went from a standing start to a landing on the moon at a speed that now seems impossible. It describes the unprecedented engineering challenges that had to be overcome to create the mammoth Saturn V and the facilities to launch it. It takes you onto the gantries at Cape Canaveral and behind the consoles of Houston's Mission Control as it relives the tragedy of the fire on Apollo 1, the first descent to the lunar surface, and the rescue of Apollo 13

A story of daring bordering on recklessness on the ground and life-and-death decisions made in seconds during the flights, Apollo captures the drama of humans leaving Earth for the first time.

Awesome

I worked at NASA for 5 years in the 80s. The book recreates all the feelings that a NASA engineer experiences but at a much higher intensity.

Great book for anyone wanting the real history of Apollo and what it took to land a man in the moon.

Breathtaking

Absolutely incredible, inspiring narrative. informative, but not dry. Great Narration too. I cannot express enough how amazing the story of the Apollo Program is. The problems they overcame, to include time constraints and dealing with designing such a dangerous program relatively safely from the ground up... I cannot recommend this enough. Please. Give it a listen.

Winner of space race descriptive literature

The narrator and the material are an unbeatable combination. If you only have one work on the US space race, this should be the one.

Best book ever for space, ops, and engineering fans

I’ve spent my career at NASA, and I wish I had read this book early in my career and again every few years. Such an amazing account of decisions, personalities, engineering challenges, flight control - with all of the things that are important to me about how things transpired. I’ve been on the edge of my seat for so many chapters, and had to rewind if I missed anything. I’m making this mandatory reading for my engineering teams!

a great about a great accomplishment

I really enjoyed listening to this audiobook about the manned moon missions. thru the years i had heard most of the stories before and met a couple of the key players but this is a compelling story about the people who made it happen, all together in one very nice package.

the narrator is very good for the technical nature of the book.

highly recommended.

THE book to read about the Apollo Program

A story less about the astronauts, and more about the others, technicians, engineers and managers, who made Apollo not just possible, but a resounding success. My favorite book to read or to listen.

great book, dry reading

This was an exceptional book, especially for those interested in the space program. It contains a great balance of personal storyline, politics, science/technology and management principles that accompanied our successes in the 60's. The reading, however, was quite dry and sterile, which is unfortunate given the conversational style of the text.

Great insight into the Apollo programme

A thoroughly enjoyable recounting of the Apollo programme, from the early 60's through to the final Apolo flight, Apollo 17

behind the scenes in an amazing time of exploratio

fascinating for a boomer who grew up following the space program. It even gave background on Kennedy's speech, supporting the conclusion it is usually given too much emphasis. We were on the way already.

Inspiring and fun

I listen to a lot of military history, but that can be heavy going sometimes. I bought this as a refreshing change and I was so glad I did.

It covers the almost boyish enthusiasm with which engineers and scientists dived into their work on the Apollo program. The more sober chapters - the Apollo 1 fire and the Apollo 13 mission - are covered sensitively but with a full explanation.

I heartily recommend this to anyone with even a passing interest in space or aerospace.

brillant detail

Covers the program with lots of technical details which helps explain the huge challenges they had to overcome. from reading it I now understand why NASA hasn't gone back.

What a story...

Despite being nearly 30 years old, this is still a fascinating account of an epic story. The anecdotes it recounts of the characters involved in America’s pursuit of Kennedy’s goal of “We go to the Moon” is truly inspirational. Be your interest science, engineering, management approaches or just plain adventure, the story of Apollo has it all and this is the best account of it I have read to-date (although Gene Kranz’s autobiography Failure Is Not an Option runs it a close second). The narration could have been better, sounding at times like a synthesized voice but, when the story is this good, it really doesn’t matter that much… Straight onto my (very short) list of books for re-reading at a later date.

A Tour de Force!

Brilliantly narrated too. I've read many, many books about the US space program and was nevertheless delighted to discover this one, which provides a totally different perspective. Long though the book is, it is very far from a regurgitation of the standard history of Apollo. Every chapter had a new discovery for me. Loved it and wished it was longer!

Fascinating!

So much admiration for these people after listening to this book.
Will definitely listen again.
It’s mind blowing what these guys where capable off with such limited tech compared to today.
The story of the unsung hero’s and genius minds that made it possible. Loved it.

An excellent insight

One of a few books that I am listening too again, a great look back to the history that I was privileged to witness, has certainly opened my eyes to the extreme difficulties that beset putting a man on the moon and returning him safely to earth.

It’s like listening to a 1980’s digitised computer voice.!!

The story is amazing and the details is immense, I am very technically minded but at some stages this got me thinking! The only issue I had was the narrator.. I’m sorry but it’s so mono-tonal, dry and like I said in the title sounds like a computer voice.
