As the third book in the series, Anne of the Island by Lucy Maud Montgomery continues to follow the adventures of Anne Shirley.

After leaving her teaching career behind in Green Gables, Anne attends Redmond College in Nova Scotia with some of her friends. Anne and her friends spend the first year of school at a boarding house, but they then decide to live together in a quaint little cottage known as Patty's Place. Here Anne pursues her dream of higher education but is interrupted by Gilbert Blythe and his attempts at seeking her hand in marriage.

Anne refuses to accept his proposal because he does not match the image of the "perfect" man she has for herself. Thus Gilbert gives up, and he and Anne slowly become more distant. Another Redmond College student, Roy, attracts the attention of Anne because he is the embodiment of the tall, dark, and handsome man Anne had imagined. However, after two years of courtship, Anne realizes that she was only in love with the idea of a man like Roy, but Roy was not the man that she needed.

After turning down Roy's marriage proposal and graduating from college, Anne returns to Green Gables. Although she now has a BA degree, Anne feels lonely and confused. She hears that Gilbert has fallen gravely ill and realizes that she has loved Gilbert from the beginning and hopes that it's not too late for her to tell Gilbert how she feels.

Beloved story - not my favorite reader

If I had to make a suggestion I would say to listen to a different version - this reader annoyed me to no end. Her "Anne" voice was absolutely awful. She came close to ruining this beloved sweet story. I almost had to switch to a different reader version (there were several options). I listened to Andrea Giordani and while I do love a British accent, I couldn't stand this reader. She would have completely ruined it for me if the story itself weren't so wonderful. Also it irritated me to no end that she first read a complete synopsis of the story with a reveal of the ending! Ugh - are you kidding me???? So I knew what was to happen from the outset and that dampened my spirits somewhat. Anyway I loved the story despite the horrible reader's voices.
Anne goes away to college for 4 years. She rooms with some entertaining girls and finds many a proposal for marriage headed her way. She is not as carefree and spirited as in the past as she is finally growing up, but she remains true to her nature. She is an adored character for certain. Anne finds love, frustration, and perhaps even true love throughout this sweet story.

I loved the story, BUT

Narrator's voice for Anne was nasal sounding and annoying. loved the story. Only complaint here.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I love Anne books but this woman's voice and accent were horrible!!! :( I couldn't take it and had to leave off listening to it early on and get another version.

Narration terrible!

I bought this book and literally could not get past the first hour of the narrators voice. I ended up downloading a different version and it was better.

I want to stab my ears with scissors!

What disappointed you about Anne of the Island?

I got this because I had listened to the other books. The narration of this story is horrific. It completely destroys the characters. The reader tries to make voices for all the characters and you couldn't find a more irritating sounding voice to read a book.

What did you like best about this story?

I didn't get past the first 5 minutes. I will have to return it. Thank God there's another version.
