I've been through this book more than once already. What struck me most about this book is how clearly South lays out the patterns I missed in real time. The early warning signals section made me cringe because I recognized every single one from relationships I stayed in way too long.

The jealousy and testing chapter finally gave me language for behaviors I couldn't quite articulate when they were happening in my life. It's not about blame but rather understanding the mechanics so I can respond instead of react.

The breakdown patterns hit close to home. I found myself mentally checking boxes as I read, realizing how predictable the trajectory in every relationship is. It stung but I am glad I went through it.

The parts about 'reclaiming your role' section aren't about getting her back or becoming a better version of yourself just for for someone else. For me it was about rebuilding so I don't end up in the same situation with a different person.

Recovery insights from other men felt real to me. If you're ignoring red flags right now (like I have done too many times to count), this will make you uncomfortable. But if you've already been burned, it'll help you make sense of what happened and avoid repeating it.

I needed this book five years ago. You might need it now. 5 stars from me. I am buying, reading and listening to all of South's books. They are really helping me make sense of why relationships failed for me even though I wanted so badly to make them work, and hopefully actionable strategies so that heartbreak becomes (most) a thing of the past.
