Publisher's summary

A revelatory tale of love gained and lost, from a master of contemporary American fiction.

Gerard sits, fully clothed, in his empty bathtub and pines for Benna. Neighbors in the same apartment building, they share a wall, and Gerard listens for the sound of her toilet flushing. Gerard loves Benna. And then Benna loves Gerard. She listens to him play piano, she teaches poetry, and sings at nightclubs.

As their relationship ebbs and flows, through reality and imagination, Lorrie Moore paints a captivating, innovative portrait of men and women in love and not in love.

Read this now.

I have never felt so seen or understood by a novel. I've been reading Lorrie Moore for the past few days, and this is the last book in her bibliography for me. I wish I'd read it first.

another great book and reading

I did have a bit of a hard time initially getting into this book. however, once I did, the character development was compelling and the narrator is awesome.

Fine book bad on audible

Too quite recording, couldn’t hear it when going throughout my day so might as well have read it.
