Her characters are all unsteady on their feet in one way or another; they all yearn for connection and betterment, though each in very different ways, but they are often tripped up by their own baser impulses and existential insecurities.

Maudlin and Depressing
Not sure if it’s artistic or just downright sad and depressing. I plowed through it hoping for some redemptive element, but no.
Not sure what kind of philosophy Moore is reading, but I hope she finds what she’s looking for. For me, this isn’t it. I can relate to some of it. But if there are two roads and we get a choice, I’ll take the one with hope.

breathtaking prose
Lorries Moore's stories always blow me over and leave me dumbstruck. She is amazing. Self Help is my favorite but this is right up there.

excellent writing, excellent narration.
i highly recommend this book. if you're depressed, you won't feel alone any more.

Meh
Some of the stories are interesting portraits but some are, to be frank, boring. I would suggest skipping a story you don’t like until you get to the good ones.

I wanted to like it
I wanted to like it, but I just wasn’t a fan. I selected this book to read for as my “finish in a day” book for January 2021. This book was recommended in a list I’d found online for the category. I’ve read other compilations of short stories and enjoy quite enjoy the non-traditional ones, especially if there isn’t a happy ending, but these stories were truly depressing and it was a challenge to get through each story. I’d still like to read more by this author and hope some of her other works appeal to me!
