Publisher's summary

A client with delusions of a deadly conspiracy draws attorney David Adams into a darkness where only the paranoid know how to get out alive.

Former up-and-coming hotshot attorney David Adams left his glamorous corporate law firm to fight for the disenfranchised. With a caseload of petty offenses, a meager office in a crumbling building, and little in the way of compensation, David needs a real case.

When he agrees to represent Rebel, David recognizes this will be the biggest challenge of his young legal career. The mentally unstable homeless man has been accused of murder, and the evidence of his guilt seems overwhelming. But it’s the victim who shakes David’s world: a county prosecutor who just happens to be an old law school friend. Rebel’s murky defense: a paranoid insistence on a CIA plot to silence the derelict.

Aided only by a "legal team" of misfit street friends and a fellow counselor lured into this dark web, David will risk everything to defend his client...who may not be nearly as crazy as he seems.

Superb legal thriller!

AN UNEQUAL DEFENSE is the second novel in the David Adams legal thriller series by attorney and author Chad Zunker. The series is set in Austin, Texas. The series novels are standalone but listening to An Equal Justice first is very helpful. The publisher's summary is excellent so I will not add to it. Narration is outstanding. I very highly recommend this series

Chad Zunker's Sam Callahan series is also excellent.

Audible: An Unequal Defense is a legal thriller, not an espionage thriller!

A Most Unusual Legal Thriller!

A schizophrenic homeless client, a down-on-his-luck honest young attorney, and a scheme of corruption reaching to the highest levels of power are the distinctives of this nail biting legal drama. With no criminal trial experience, the protagonist seems utterly outgunned in undertaking a notorious capital murder case, and with the death penalty looming for his client should he fail, the stakes could not be higher. This is a masterfully crafted tale that stands totally on the strength of the writing, without any large amounts of cursing, crudity, or sex that are so often a part of other thriller novels whose authors mistakenly think they must rely on such things for credibility of dialogue or story line. Chad Zunker has written a masterful story that lacks for nothing, and takes second place to none. The narrator, Christopher Ryan Grant, is a pure pleasure to listen to, and seems to draw the voices and characters of a whole cast from his voice and training alone. This was one of my favorite listens, and the best I have heard in a long time!

Fast-Paced, Well-Developed Characters

I loved this story. It was a great continuation to the book that introduced us to the protagonist, David Adams. I won't provide any spoilers, but I will say that if Chad Zunker writes a book, I will read it. The characters are well-developed so much so that the reader is given a sense of knowing the characters personally. I have read this book and listened to the narrator, Christopher Ryan Grant and I hope that he is chosen to read all of Chad Zunker's books in the future. The pacing, change of voice for different characters and clarity of his voice make for an excellent listen. I highly recommend this book!

This is not just another murder mystery

An assistant district attorney is killed in a dark alley. A homeless man is charged with first degree murder.

David Adams, a new attorney who has never handled a murder case, is asked to handle the case by one of his homeless friends. Once meeting the defendant, Rebel, he accepts the challenge.

Rebel doesn’t quite remember what happened in the alley, so he isn’t much help with the defense. David uses the few clues he gets from Rebel and figures out what really happened.

Good story with a lot about Austin, Texas and the homeless in Austin. I did figure most of the results of the case but the story never got there directly. Many unexpected twists and turns. It is the second book of a series so you might want to read “An Equal Justice” first.

An open and shut case - or is it?

This is an excellent legal thriller. Between the publisher’s summary and the review by Wayne (Matthews, NC) there’s not much left for me to say. But I did want to leave a review in support of this outstanding book.
Also, if you have kindle unlimited this book is free to borrow with the kindle edition.
Christopher Ryan Grant does a wonderful job narrating.
