A scintillating auditory pleasure

At first it was very difficult for me to reconcile the narrator's husky, Dirty Harry-like voice with the character he was playing. Imagine Clint Eastwood delivering his famous line, "You've gotta ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well do ya, punk?" Now give all that gravelly testosterone to a young, feminine Korean gay man and try to get into the story. It only took a few minutes, though, and the voice actor had me strapped into a roller coaster and squeezing the handle bar as tightly as I could. While the masculinity of the voice did not fit the character, the narrator's acting ability more than made up for the miscasting. And the author's words dripped with desire, with passion, with the kind of pleasure that can make sex feel like the world's best recreational drug. That's what this book is -- the world's most euphoria-inducing recreational drug. It's going to seduce you. It's going to take away the outside world. You're going to be lusting for the action. You're going to be lost in the main character's sexual desires and delight. Then the story is going to take a sudden and very dark turn. Hold on tight! It's quite a ride! This just might be the greatest literary masterpiece of 2023.
