The son of a duke and an infamous mother, Alistair Mabry, Marquess of Rexton, fought his way to respectability. Now, the most eligible bachelor in London, marriage-shy Rexton will take only a wife with an impeccable reputation, good breeding, and a penchant for staying out of the gossip sheets. But when he strikes a deal to be seen “courting” a sweet young debutante whose notorious older sister has blemished her chances for marriage, Rexton is unexpectedly drawn to the highly inappropriate, calamitous Tillie, Lady Landsdowne herself.

After a scandalous incident that sent shockwaves throughout society and disgraced her, Tillie refuses to cower in the face of the ton. Instead, she will hold her head high as she serves as chaperone for her younger sister, but Tillie is convinced Rexton’s courtship is shrouded with secrets—ones she vows to uncover. However, doing so requires getting dangerously close to the devilishly handsome and forbidden marquess…

The narrator's American accent sounds like Betty White - similar inflections and pitch. Her natural speaking voice is fine, not a favorite, but not detracting from the story. The first half of the book is annoyingly repetitive - she's drawn to him but it's wrong because he's courting her sister; he's drawn to her but that's bad because of her reputation. Over and over and over. The second half is better with appearances by characters from previous books and various outings to add interest to the story. I'd rate the first half 3* and the second half 4*. Not fabulous, but a light, easy romance.

Pretty Good

This has been one of my favorite series and this latest edition is no disappointment. I admit that I found it a bit hard to get into but that may have been due to the narration. Helen Lloyd does a good job but she's too slow for me. Once I increased the speed of the narration to 1.25X it worked better.

Coming from the family he does it's no surprise that Roxton would be attracted to a "scandalous heiress." And Tillie, trying to avoid the reputation she's developed, doesn't want to get in the way of her sister's marriage possibilities. How they both navigate the ton and reach their HEA is a fun story. And there is cheating at cards, of course.

Another winner in a great series

I waited for this to become available and was disappointed with it. Most of these stories are similar in that the hero and heroine have some problems but work through them and end up HEA. The fun comes in the humor and with the narration which neither were present in this novel. The narrator put me to sleep. I remember the author's earlier novels being fun and entertaining.

The heroine needed to get off the pity pot. All in all, the whole novel was flat and boring.

Disappointing.
