Publisher's summary

The Day of the Jackal meets Syriana in the near future.

When the CIA intercepts intelligence on a terrorist attack in Kuwait, Petra Shirazi, a former field agent, comes face-to-face with the Ahriman, one of Iran's deadliest assassins.

After a disastrous mission forces her out of the field, Petra Shirazi retires from a life of espionage to work in a research position. Three years later, her division stumbles upon a money trail that reveals a massive new wave of terrorist attacks. The money trail places her in the midst of an assassination plot that implicates the highest levels of the Kuwaiti and Iranian governments.

Petra will find herself face-to-face with the Ahriman, a man named for the Persian spirit of destruction who is responsible for a series of bomb blasts that paralyzed the Suez Canal two years earlier. As the investigation begins to unravel, the ripple effects threaten to engulf not only the Middle East and its Western allies, but also the darkest secrets of Petra's past.

Length is a drawback

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Recommending this book depends on what kind of reader it is being recommended to. This book has very detailed description of the world it is set in and introduces us to a different culture, which is again handled with much care. All the characters are mostly well built too. You can see that the author has put good amount of effort into all that. If that's what you look for in a book, give this a try. If you are looking for a fast paced action thriller, you might be disappointed.

What aspect of Tom Adams’s performance would you have changed?

Tom Adams's performance was alright. Nothing really bad worth complaining about.

Was Ahriman: The Spirit of Destruction worth the listening time?

I found this book to be too long. There were quite a few fluff scenes that didn't contribute anything to the main story and should've been edited out. The story moves very slowly and gets kinda boring, which isn't a good thing for a book in this genre. It never felt like a "high stakes" game and there was no real sense of "danger/doom". If the story was more fast paced, keeping the main story in focus, it would've been much better and worth the listening time.

A scary what if.

So, democracy is no always preferable to a king. Split Era stories are becoming common place sine Neil Stevenson's Cryptinomacon. Ahriman does this beautifully, gives you insights into modern day spy-craft, delves into middle eastern culture, and tells a riviting story you can't put down. Puja Guha has created some bad guys that rival the nazis and the US comes out smelling pretty good. Tom Adams has put a great effort in his performance. Can he ever run out of different voices?

It was ok

I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the narrator or author.

The story ok maybe a little predictable but good enough to keep you interested.

The narrator has a great voice but his accents were not the best and at times seemed a bit child like. He’d been better to maybe not try so hard for the distinction and just go for clarity.

Overall not bad if you’re into spy vs spy type stories.

a tiny lapse for the future

for this kind of book I would expected a lot of changes and though I got the changes I did stay in reality and I loved it the story was great I had some tiny issues with the book but it was so little that I didn't mind it in the end the book is good the narrator could have done a little better but overall it was good
could have been a great action terrorist movie

Amazing audio performance!

If you could sum up Ahriman: The Spirit of Destruction in three words, what would they be?

Suspenseful, many characters, scary premise!

Have you listened to any of Tom Adams’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is the first performance by Tom Adams that I have heard! He can do so many voices, quickly changing, just amazing!!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I wanted to listen to it in one sitting, but it was impossible to do so!!

Any additional comments?

Again, just amazing!!

A very entertaining espionage story

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I thought this was a very entertaining spies and espionage book. I thought the narration was pretty good and the story itself was interesting and kept my attention. It had plenty of action and felt well paced. I would definitely be open to more if this became a series.

It was ok - spoiler alert!

There was lot of potential but somehow I felt I’m that it did not deliver. There was a layer of political correctness added like addressing the feelings of field agents, come on if someone is in a life of death situation they wouldn’t have the time. Or the narcissistic behavior of the boy friend who followed.
