Mackenzie Owens is happy to finally settle in and sell some books in peace by the Cornish seaside after solving the murder she was suspected of on her arrival. But you know what they say about the best laid plans....

When a friend of Maggie’s dies, everyone believes it’s by natural causes, including the local authorities. But Maggie knows better. Someone killed her friend, and she enlists Mack’s help to prove it. And just when Mack thinks a new murder to solve is enough for one week, she finds herself embroiled in the middle of a theft at a poker game involving many of the less savory characters in town.

And she’s not talking about the Cornish pasties.

Unfortunately for Mack, Aksel and his twinkling eyes and annoyingly gorgeous smile seem to be her best bet when it comes to getting some of the answers she’s after. But there’s someone dangerous out there, too. And as Mack doubles down to prove Maggie’s friend was killed, she realizes someone out there is intent on making sure she folds…permanently.

Against The Odds is the second book in the MacKenzie Owens Mystery series written by Jasmine Webb. This is a great storyline with laugh out loud moments as Mack and her grandmother banter back and forth. This one is the best one so far.
I enjoyed having a strong female protagonist like Mac.
Brittany Presley gave an excellent performance as she brought the storyline to life and gave each character their own distinct voice.
I know I’ll be purchasing the entire series as I’m already hooked.
I highly recommend this book to cozy mystery fans.

Another great addition

The story is fine. Just a light cozy mystery. I’d like Cornwall to come to life more since it’s a great location. This being the second book, I expected deeper character development that just wasn’t there. The most annoying part of the book are the constant digs at the US. Snide remarks about various things. Everything from the education system, to gun control to tax dollars for war. Even though I might have agreed with some of the sentiments, it was said in such in such a way that it just made me mad and ruined what was actually going on with the story at that moment. It was unnecessary to the storyline and just made the characters and the author look ignorant. I probably won’t be reading anymore of the series. The only really good thing about this was the narration. She saved this story for me.

Brittany Presley’s narration saves this!

Quick read! Really enjoyed this one as much as the first. Cannot wait to continue the mystery series! Go Mackenzie and squad!

I kept listening because I love Brittany! The story was just ok. Predictable and the “you can buy a gun in any grocery store in America with no ID” repeated multiple times got old… All the political stuff is just a turn off to all her books. It’s a shame authors can’t just write a book….

Not as good as the 1st
