Publisher's summary

*The instant New York Times bestseller*

The untold story of four of the most decorated soldiers of World War II—all Medal of Honor recipients—from the beaches of French Morocco to Hitler’s own mountaintop fortress, by the national bestselling author of
The First Wave

“Pitch-perfect.”—The Wall Street Journal • “Riveting.”—World War II magazine • “Alex Kershaw is the master of putting the reader in the heat of the action.”—Martin Dugard

As the Allies raced to defeat Hitler, four men, all in the same unit, earned medal after medal for battlefield heroism. Maurice “Footsie” Britt, a former professional football player, became the very first American to receive every award for valor in a single war. Michael Daly was a West Point dropout who risked his neck over and over to keep his men alive. Keith Ware would one day become the first and only draftee in history to attain the rank of general before serving in Vietnam. In WWII, Ware owed his life to the finest soldier he ever commanded, a baby-faced Texan named Audie Murphy. In the campaign to liberate Europe, each would gain the ultimate accolade, the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Tapping into personal interviews and a wealth of primary source material, Alex Kershaw has delivered his most gripping account yet of American courage, spanning more than six hundred days of increasingly merciless combat, from the deserts of North Africa to the dark heart of Nazi Germany. Once the guns fell silent, these four exceptional warriors would discover just how heavy the Medal of Honor could be—and how great the expectations associated with it. Having survived against all odds, who among them would finally find peace?

Needs to be Remembered

The stories of the Greatest Generation must not just pass into history.

How different the world would be if it wasn't for men such as the "Marne Men"

The author keeps you fully engaged in their stories, as he interweaves their stories together not concentrating on a single individual. We start in North Africa and end in Nuremberg!

Highly recommenced!!

Amazing story of the Greatest Generation

A truly amazing story about the heroes of the 3rd Infantry Division, those that received the MOA and those that never came home. My father proudly served in the 3rd and was one of the only two in his original company that fought through the entire war. These stories bring back so many memories of places he fought and the things he was willing to talk about. I only wish he could have been here to hear it. I still remember him singing The Dogface Soldier.

Excellent

I enjoyed the details without the book getting bogged down. Information on Audie Murphy was especially interesting.

This book is a must have

A very fine account of some of the bravest men in U.S. Army history. This book recounts why men fight and why men must carry on that fight after the physical fighting is done.

An Interesting and Important WW2 History Lesson

I grew up during WW2 but was too young for Korea so Vietnam was “My War”! Unfortunately for those of us who were there and served faithfully it was not a “popular war” and thus the dedication and bravery of those involved in the fighting were not much honored or celebrated at the time. Thus it is truly gratifying to read and listen to the stories of those who served so honorably at that time and were then recognized and properly honored by the citizens of our country.

Inspiring is earned here

Thoroughly researched and painstakingly told through the eyes of the dog soldiers on the ground. I will not soon forget this book or the men whose story it tells.

A touching and interesting book.

I thoughoughly enjoyed this book. A great cast of real characters and their biographies and military service. I also learned a great deal I didn't know about the invasion of Italy and the southern European area of operations in WW2.
I highly recommend this.
