Publisher's Summary

Until she discovers the truth of her sister’s death, no one will rest in peace.

New Hampshire, 1865. Marion Abbott is summoned to Brawders House asylum to collect the body of her sister, Alice. She’d been found dead after falling four stories from a steep-pitched roof. Officially: an accident. Confidentially: suicide. But Marion believes a third option: murder.

Returning to her family home to stay with her brother and his second wife, the recently widowed Marion is expected to quiet her feelings of guilt and grief - to let go of the dead and embrace the living. But that’s not easy in this house full of haunting memories.

Just when the search for the truth seems hopeless, a stranger approaches Marion with chilling words: I saw her fall.

Now Marion is more determined than ever to find out what happened that night at Brawders, and why. With no one she can trust, Marion may risk her own life to uncover the secrets buried with Alice in the family plot.

Great Story

The beginning did not have me gripped, it was a little slow moving. But I am so glad I kept with it! It picks up with many surprises and a really fun twist ending. Really enjoyed this one.

Skillful Narrator

Excellent narration of this intriguing mystery! The skill with which Ms. Cobb distinguishes the characters' voices, accents, and emotions makes each of them distinct and real thus adding a delightful touch of authenticity to the suspenseful plot. Well done!

Terrible Narration

I cannot even tell you what this story is about because I could not even make it through chapter one with this narrator. I’m sure she’s a lovely person in real life, but this is not her calling. The premise of the book is promising so it may be one I actually read and not listen to. The narration is such a disservice to this author.

Unexpected twists and turns!

Although I did struggle at parts of the book, overall I found it mesmerizing. I was pulling for Marian all the way through. Made me realize how limited woman were in this time and how often they were dismissed.

plot line good...

I really liked the plot and storyline. Though, there were moments when I could not quite discern whether the narrator was dreaming, speaking, or just thinking. Not enough distinction in the text. A bit of of reading between the lines, to help follow the plot was required.

Great book!!!

The book starts out kind of slow but eventually picks up. Marion seems to be the only one concerned about her sister Alice. Her brother, Lionel, appears to be in denial about the strange findings involved with Alice' death and her sister-in-law is a tad but controlling and feels like she should just get over the death. Despite what refund if saying, Marion wants the full run down on what happened the night if get sister's death. Who wasn't where they were supposed to be, how did Alice get to the roof, why did she look how she did, and so many other questions. Marion is convinced Alice didn't commit suicide nor was her fall an accident and she will stop at nothing until the truth is revealed.
