Publisher's summary

Born a monster. Destined to be a hero. Half-orc. Half-human. All hero.

Lugor is a half-orc, and in his world, that's a very dangerous thing to be. He dreams of becoming an adventurer, slaying monsters and delving into dungeons. Unfortunately for him, one cut to his skin could reveal his secret.

He's forced to spend his days in his small village, working at the smithy and keeping his head down. But when his world is turned upside down in a monster attack on his village, Lugor seeks training at the Adventurer Academy, where he can learn to become the champion that he was born to be. It won't be easy, especially whilst contending against an arrogant mage who is determined to see him fail.

With a steadfast dwarven elementalist and a sarcastic dark-elf necromancer by his side, Lugor sets out to prove that just because he's half-orc doesn't mean he can't be a hero.

This story includes the following:

  • Half-monster protagonist
  • Game mechanics in a fantasy world
  • Sword and board protagonist
  • Crafting abilities like enchantment and blacksmithing

Cosmic Intervention lead me to this book

At the time of this review I haven’t finished the book, but what lead me to this book makes me believe I was supposed to find it. Without situations I would have never know about this, but it’s just too perfect. This is a great read. I highly recommend.

It is a good book but has one bad voice actor

The book is good enough. It is a YA book and I think it would hit that target audience well. The "But": I don't say this to be mean but Aurelia Vazquez sounds awful. Either she is wearing a night brace, or has something in her mouth, or has a constant swollen tongue when she talks. What ever it is she can't annunciate properly. On top of that she also has a slight lisp. This is frustrating because my wife and one of my kids are not native English speakers, it is their second language. This makes it really hard for them to understand what she is saying because her way is speaking is rather bad. Since I often listen to books with my children this makes it not good that I have to pause and explain what she says since she can't properly speak. Thus this lowers the quality of the performance a lot. So a 4 Star book but a 3 Star performance.

Good young teen book!

Good book with some pacing issues. Those issues leave out some of the building of personality of everyone. Still a good book!

my thoughts

first of all it's not to inventive with its story but It kept me wanting more. the main cast of characters where good and ended up making me laugh quite a few times. my favorite part definitely is the inventive ways they used magical equipment. it had a few moments where I thought of my own ideas that I didn't think they would have and they ended up doing it to my surprise.

Half orc goes to Hero school

Lugor is a half orc. In this world, that is a death sentence. His plan has always to become stronger. He has been hiding his heritage in his little village and sneaking out at night to hunt goblins. He has been successful, but without a class, the experience just gets banked. He has spent his time training under the village blacksmith.

When the blacksmith gets recruited to go teach at the Hero Academy, Lugor knows that this is his opportunity. He pushes himself into a new dungeon that he just found out about. Dungeons are the best ways to earn a class scroll. If he can get one of those, he can turn his life around.

I really did enjoy this book a lot. The author has a very well developed game system for the world. Lugor makes clever use of his skills and strategies how to get ahead. The voice acting was very well done.

A book for teenagers

There is some "almost" swearing and little gore, it seems made for teens to escape into a power fantasy. the hero makes teenager mistakes and expresses himself as if he was 15-16; but he's supposed to be in his twenties, so that's a bit weird, but okay. I would say it's a solid book for younglings, for me(an adult), it's a bit bland and timid in its decisions.

Not bad.

Kinda like a B movie that's still worth watching. I will get the next book.
