Not useful for advanced speakers

I found the content of this book quite obvious and hence, of very little use to improve my pronunciation. The author spends most of her time on motivating the reader and explaining the importance of having a correct speech, which shouldn't be necessary, considering that the reader freely chooses to buy and read this book. Moreover, there is no special emphasis on the professional environment, no particular advice or tools for work situations, thus I find the ”for professionals” part of the title a bit misleading. Also, I found the narrator rhythm a bit annoying and way too slow for speakers that are already working in English. Summarizing, this book is probably useful for an intermediate level speaker, but definitely not for professionals looking to polish their accents.

Save your money! Do not purchase!

Introduction and first chapter is all about how your accent will detrimental your next job interview. Some samples in the second chapter, but no repetition or guidance on how to make the "American Sounds". She actually asks you to go and practice with your English speaking friend.

She repeats the word "accent" If I hear her saying "accent" one more time, I will throw up.

very shallow

the book was clearly written for hard copy. with minor adjustments it could be a good audiobook, however those adjustments weren't made and the narration sounds funny. also, not enough time is given to repeat the practice words. in general, The book provides some useful advices which could have fit into 2 chapters, most of the book is a long motivational speach.

Train and sound like a real AMerican.

One’s accent really does matter! This is one of the few audio accent reduction guides out there. Now I know what I’m doing wrong whenever I say my own sentences. Accent reduction can be tricky and difficult; having a guide like this comforts me.

brilliant!

Covered the most important phonics/sounds that my clients from China have problems with. It is one great resource I can make use of in learning to say difficult sounds in English quickly and to reduce your accent audibly.

Great read!

This book is for someone who has already learned a second language, but wants to take the next step and eliminate their accent entirely. While the author is appealing to folks whose second language is English, it is presented in a way that would be beneficial for anybody looking to master a second language. Highly recommended!

Good!

If you did not grow up in US or have any formal course of English speaking training, you'd find this book and CDs really helpful. No matter how long you've been here, you'd find a few interesting things in this course.

Wow

Innovative, creatively inspired, practical - and written with wit and wry humor, too. Ann Cook has dissected and then packaged a remarkable program based on the understanding of the rhythms and intonations in the American accent. We speak in melodic and rhythmic phrases – simply learning to pronounce individual words is akin to only playing individual notes as opposed to speaking in sound groups. My ESL and accent students love the exercises, and after they “get it” they’re amazed. A great, great resource and approach. It changed forever how I thought about the language that I love to speak, study and teach.

Great book for learners.

I was originally born in Malaysia and immigrated to the United States at an early age. I needed to learn how to pronounce words correctly and fluently. In Malaysia, people do speak English but mix it with different dialects which confuses the language. After using this book, it dramatically increased my fluency in English.
