Publisher's Summary

Bonjour, my name is André Chevalier. It has been my joy and my great honor to help those who have lost their way. Not long after I began my journey, I met two such wounded souls.

Renata Koreman, my little mouse. She came to me as a child - shy, mute, injured...broken. It took oh-so many years to start to bring her back to herself! Yet, I could not fully heal her.

Years later, Grant Wilkinson, he too fell into my hands. The ex-Army Ranger was badly disfigured and saw himself as a monster. Isolated by secrets, solitary and self-contained, his colleagues affectionately named him "Frosty". Yet, how should one behave when besieged by a lifetime of confusion and guilt?

The moment I saw him, I thought of her and I wondered. The eyes, they cannot always see clearly. And the heart? Ah, the heart can only guess at the truth. So it was that I remained uncertain.

Could the mouse and the monster heal each other?

Enough inner monologue already!

This is a mediocre story of unethical therapists. One of the major things I disliked was the lengthy portion of the story that's just inner monologue. It starts with Grant's story at the start and lasts a little over 2hrs, largely in the form of an inner monologue. Then the short tale of Stan followed by the lengthy story of Renata, which is another 2 hrs. or so, and it's almost all inner monologue as well. That's 4 hours!! So the primary couple doesn't even meet until more than 4hrs into a 9+ hr tale. It's unfortunate that inner monologues is the only way the author new how to reveal who Grant and Renata are.
In a nutshell, this book is a failed attempt at depth. The writer simply doesn't have the writing chops to pull it off. The story would've been better without the attempt; it then may have had less unwarranted & unnecessary drama and less over-wrought statements. And the cherry on top is the poorly-done French accent the narrator provides.
After dozing, I woke up and the story had finished running. I was grateful and didn't look back. I don't care what happened to anyone in the story and can't stand giving it any more of my time.

Excellent audible book and story

What a strong story of how childhood sexual abuse can affect the adult lives of the children. This is a rollercoaster of emotions.

Chilling and insightful...Spell binding!!!

I didn't know what to expect and I got caught up in a chilling, yet insightful story. I can't wait to see what happens next. I will start book 2 today. This book was so complex but made me think about the way I look at myself and my life. I accept the monsters of the past, so they can help me appreciate and open myself to a possible future.

Ahhh, André... Another Gripping Tale of Healing

I was provided this audiobook through Audiobook Boom at no charge by the author in exchange for an unbiased review.

There is just SOMETHING about the character of André Chevalier, the sex therapist and coach, and then add the voice given to him by Roberto Scarlato. Mmmmm, Mmmmm, Good. He handles his damaged clients with the insight of a god. In this book, they are Renata and Grant. He pairs the small and timid girl with an abused giant of a man. How can a mouse heal a monster and a monster heal a mouse? Only André knows.

As mentioned, Roberto is an excellent narrator. He is up there at the top and doesn’t disappoint.

Abuse

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would. It is a story that I think is well written and worth giving a listen to.

Any additional comments?

The storyline was good and I enjoyed listening to it, but it's not really a story for me. I know it's one that will be enjoyed by plenty of other fabulous listeners!

Intensely Emotional!

I was hooked by this intensely emotional audiobook from the beginning. It is an incredible story of the painful and long-lasting effects of childhood abuse, both sexual and physical. Led by a brilliant, caring, quirky psychologist, two individuals learn to overcome the past, including the feelings of guilt and responsibility that abusers instill in their victims. The book was thought-provoking and occasionally heart-breaking, and I couldn't help wanting Grant and Renata to find a brighter future. But, they can't escape the ramifications of their own actions, and just when things are looking up, the past comes back. My only disappointment is that this was not a stand-alone book, so the story is incomplete and ends on a cliff-hanger. Neither the book title nor the description make this evident. The reader/purchaser should be told this upfront. That's why I knocked off one star from the overall rating.

The narration was excellent, with Mr. Scarlato providing distinct voices for the different characters. The delivery was natural and well-paced.

Intense

Loved this listen! An intense and complex story with great characters, with plenty of unexpected humor. Does have dark subject matter, most of the characters are dealing with past abuse and are healing. Fantastic narrator who made each character unique. Highly recommend and will be looking into reading/listening to the other books in the series. I received a free review copy of this audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.

WOW, that was intense

Pretty intense and emotional listen, but I must say very enlightening in understanding her the abused victim feels and why.
The narrator did a great job, but it would have been ideal to have a female voice for a bigger impact to the whole storyline.

Layered

I’ve never been disappointed by Nikki Sex. She is a wonderful author that explores topics in a way that I love. This book explores topics of abuse, depression, guilt, societal norms, and so much more. She’s able to layer these topics into the story in such a way that you don’t feel like someone is shoving something down your throat, rather she’s just telling us each characters truth.

I can be very picky when it comes to narrators doing both male and female voices, put accents on top of that and I frequently roll my eyes. NOT this time! Roberto Scarlato has a clear voice that pulls you into the story. He is able to keep characters separate without over doing it. His accents were delightful and really brought Andre to life. I’ve read many of Nikki’s books and I was happy to finally hear him come alive!

I received this book for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review. I was so happy with it that I’ve already purchased the second book!
