Publisher's Summary

When the seas of love grow choppy, sometimes the best course is to abandon ship!

Two years ago, Ryan Abernathy was too tongue-tied, too introverted, and entirely too nervous to flirt with his hot but presumably straight new roommate. So when Ryan’s sister swooped in and scooped the hottie up for herself, he accepted his fate and kept his crush a secret.

Sawyer Muller never meant to find himself in a fake relationship with his sexy roommate's sister. And how was he supposed to know that Ryan would become his bestie and star in way too many of his dreams?

Things get complicated when Julia Abernathy strikes a deal with Sawyer to upgrade from fake boyfriend to groom, though they only need to stay married long enough for her to get her trust fund. They plan a fun cruise ship wedding with her entire family in tow. Sawyer figures it sounds like an adventure, and when they quietly divorce later, he’ll finally be free of all the pretense.

With Julia and Ryan’s homophobic, snooty family present, the pressure is turned up...especially when Sawyer finds himself jilted at the altar and drowning in a sea of blame from her family. His only life preserver is the Abernathy sibling he can’t admit to wanting...Ryan.

Note: This full-length m/m romantic comedy will keep you in stitches. Watch out for an awkward first kiss, a record-making group wedding, and sexy competitive shuffleboard. Before you board this ship, make sure you pack a fan because things are about to heat up on board this vessel!

Not exactly what I expected...

Okay, so while I liked Ryan and Sawyer and thinking there were some hot scenes between them, I felt like something was missing. Perhaps it was that the story focused so much on Julia, Ryan's sister, and she was such a horrible, spoiled witch (btw, I would have liked to use another word that rhymes with that one and starts with a 'b', that's how much I didn't like her) and Ryan and Sawyer forgiving her so easily after what she did didn't sit right with me. All her antics drew the attention away from Ryan and Sawyer and then we had Ryan's awful parents and tbh, one of the reasons I finished the book was because I was hoping Julia or her father would get their comeuppance, which at least her dad did in a way. *sighs*

I can't really say I recommend this book, but one thing is for certain, Michael Pauley nailed his performance and it was my other reason to finish the book, he did a great job with all the characters, even the ones I hated and made me feel like I hadn't completely lost my time listening to this audiobook..

Abandoning Ship

3.5 Stars

This book was cute and funny. A fun and sweet story, with some cute, but totally oblivious guys. Fake Boyfriend trope is not my favorite especially when a female is involved in the ruse. I was especially annoyed by Ryan's Sister Julia in this book, I really didn't like her at all. I felt like she was selfish with all of her actions, she didn't think about what she was doing and how it would affect others, she only thought about herself. Luckily Ryan and Sawyer were able to get it together just in time to make their story line come together. Also, for me, Ryan and Sawyer didn't really have any grand HEA, it was more subtle seeing that they were friends and already had at least a partial connection with each other to begin with. But I felt like they were a little lacking in the passion department. I would have liked more passion and a stronger bond in the romance department. But, overall this story was cute and fun, just sad to say its not my favorite from this author.

Michael Pauley's voice was great for these characters, like always, he just seems to know how to voice everyone perfectly to give us a look into their personalities. I really felt involved in the story and character lives, wanting to know what happens next, and that was thanks to Michael.

Love birds on love boat

Another funny, light-hearted and enjoyable listen from Susi Hawke. 😉

Ryan and Sawyer has been friends and roommates for two years. Although there was definitely a spark and interest between them, Sawyer ended up fake dating Ryan’s sister Julia. And Ryan has no idea about their fake relationship and has always regretted being slow to move on Sawyer. Now Sawyer is going to marry Julia as a favor so that she can get her trust fund. And Ryan is wallowing I misery that his dream man is marrying his sister. When Sawyer found himself being jilted at the alter by his fake wife-to-be Julia, Ryan finally manned up and made a move on Sawyer. After all, isn’t love cruise where dreams for lovers come true?

This is quite light and funny. 😁 But I have some issues with the storyline and characters. First of all, I didn’t like Julia. She was entitled, spoilt, rude and very ungrateful to Sawyer. 😒 Second, although I believe there’s a spark between Sawyer and Ryan, I never quite felt the romance between them. It’s more of a convenient coupling rather than passionate romance for me. Regardless, it’s funny, filled with family drama and enjoyable. Love cruises are the best. 😉

Not a favorite

3.5 - 4 Blue Roses
3.5 - 4 Blue Flames

Narrator Michael Pauley delivered this romantic comedy with great promise, but it missed the mark. I expected this to be funny and sexy, but I am still waiting for a PUN. It was somewhat entertaining, but being spoiled as I am, I went into this with much too high expectations.
The plot was predictable, but I continued listening with the hope for some twist or turn to blow my mind. But, unfortunately it was cheesy.
I recommend this audiobook for when you are in the mood for some light M/M entertainment.

Pretty light fare

Ryan Abernathy and Sawyer Muller are roommates who become best friends before their relationship changes due to a scheme blowing up in Sawyer's face. The plot is fair enough, I suppose, given that this is a rom-com, though it IS still pretty thin when all is said and done. When Sawyer's fake relationship with Ryan's little sister falls apart, the two men give in to the attraction that had been there from their first meeting, but that each had ignored because of Sawyer's need to please. The homophobia they face and the accidents to which Sawyer seems prone, in addition to the slapstick humor of some events that should otherwise be quite serious, are the only reason that this story holds my attention...even if I roll my eyes a lot. The performance was middling, as always with this actor. Despite his tendency to read some sentences like someone who doesn't understand the modulating influence of punctuation marks, he was able to evoke particular characters well,

Fun story with a fantastic narrator!

I adore Susan Hawke's writing and with every audiobook of hers that's produced and narrated by none other than Michael Pauley, the fact that these two are perfectly paired as author and narrator is proven time and again. Their latest audiobook is Hawke's contribution to the multi-authored Valentine's Inc. Cruises series. Full disclosure: I haven't listened to any of the other audiobooks in the series so I have no idea if Pauley does the others or if each author gets to select the narrator they wish to give voice to their story and characters. I'm guessing, though, that what connects all the books together is that the main characters board a cruise ship.

Hawke adds a heavy dose of levity to this story about friendship and a fake relationship, and Pauley takes all that rom-com goodness and brings it up to a whole new level of listening awesomeness. I liked Ryan and Sawyer, but I have to be honest and say that it did take me several chapters to even notice any chemistry between them, due in large part to the fact that Sawyer was in his fake relationship with Julia, Ryan's somewhat flighty sister and to whom Sawyer appeared to share a really close friendship with. After an important event doesn't push through, things finally move in a whole new direction for our main characters, and everything was fast-paced, as they moved towards their one-of-a-kind happy ending. With very little drama and some laughs, Abandoning Ship was the ideal audiobook to simply sit back with and enjoy, thanks to Hawke's fab story and Pauley's superb narration. 4.5 stars. ♥

Such good fun!

I loved this book! Sawyer and Ryan meet when Sawyer replies to an advert to be Ryan’s roommate. Poor Sawyer, he is so clumsy and accident prone and let’s just say that his misadventures start in their first meeting! I laughed out loud and the laughs carried on throughout the book - mainly at Sawyer’s expense...!! I loved both men, they are gorgeous characters. Both are loving, caring and loyal to those they love. Also, both are more than slightly worn down into giving in to Ryan’s sister’s every demand! There are so many things I want to say about the funny parts of this book, but I’m going to keep quiet and not spoil the fun of hearing them as they happen. This book is fun, sweet and sexy and I highly recommend it. Susan Hawke strikes again!

Michael Pauley was a fantastic narrator for this book - he’s always lots of fun to listen to.

Abandon ship??? Never for Susi and Michael.

When Sawyer Muller met Ryan Abernathy he ended up with his head showered down Ryan's toilet. Ewwww! But he moved in with Ryan at college and they became best friends. Ryan has always had the hots for Sawyer but his sister Julia signs him up for fake boyfriend duties, so Rryan backs off.
After college Julia decides she needs to get married to get her trust fund. So she offers Sawyer £50,000 from her trust to marry her for 6 months. Sawyer thinks ok, it's not that long and it will pay his student loans.
Julia organises the wedding on a cruise ship that is marrying lots of other couples too.
Fun and mayhem ensues aboard. Enter one homophobic father of the bride and a whole set of colorful relatives.

As ever Michael Pauley brings to life Susan Hawke's words
He voices Ryan and Sawyer perfectly
Another winner guys.

Room mates to lovers?

Michael Pauley is undoubtedly my favourite narrator and I love the Valentines Inc Cruise series. Susan Hawke is new to the line up, but I love her writing style from her other series. This tale of two guys who are room mates first and then Sawyer ends up fake dating Ryan's sister, unbeknownst to him as he thinks they're really together. This Cruise is fo the wedding so they are thrown together with Ryan's horrendous parents. This story is full of humour and fun and scheming. Highly recommended for all lovers of Contemporary MM romance.

Another miss for me from this audio pairing

I think this is supposed to be comedy, but I found it annoying rather than funny. The slapstick stumbling that made up Saywer was irritating especially when it happened during sex. They dropped stupid statements in the conversation that were either ridiculous or inappropriate and had some reoccuring statements that annoyed me no end, am I right? (that was the worse one). The side characters were horrible including the sister. There was no chemistry between the MCs to base the subsequent relationship on.
Susan Hawke's quality of work varies so much from book to book that I have to wonder if she is ghost written. If she isn't then maybe she should take a bit more time over each release.
I know Michael Pauley is a much loved narrator in the genre but I hated his over the top performance in this one. The characters are always laughing and chuckling and he adds every single one into the performance.
Honestly I don't know what over people were listening to.

Fun with puns!

A standalone in a series of stories all tied to the same cruise line.
As usual, Susie Hawke has written a delightful, fun and sweet story with a fake boyfriend (to the sister), friends to lover trope and a few hijinks :) The story is not all fun and games - Sawyer started out somewhat, let's say weak, but when he had to, he stood up for himself against his fake GF and her family.

Michael Pauley does a great job (as always) with characterising the voices for each person, along with his knack for letting the emotions of the characters shine through his performance. A great way to experience the story!

Perfect MM Romcom!

This is a fantastic MM romance comedy! There is humor, romance, very funny scenes (running into Aunt Agnes as well as the balcony sex scene), figuring out what matters in your life, and telling your homophobic family to kiss your you know what. I absolutely loved it, and I will listen to it again and again.

Michael Pauley's narration really makes this audiobook! He hits all the emotions perfectly and really brings the funny scenes and conversations to life. The pleasure of this audiobook is 50% the story and 50% Pauley!

I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook through the author and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
