Publisher's Summary

Phantom PI Paul Harrison from the national best-selling Haunted Guesthouse mysteries returns with a tale of his own in a house full of ghosts, secrets, and spectacular oceanside views.…

Three years ago in a large Victorian house on the Jersey Shore in the town of Harbor Haven, fledgling private investigator Paul and his client, Maxie Malone, were murdered. Since then, recent divorcée and reluctant ghost whisperer Alison Kerby and her 10-year-old daughter, Melissa, have moved in and converted the place to a guesthouse, where Maxie and Paul are now checked in for an eternity and ready to solve any case that comes their way - or at least spook the guests (who love it). Alison’s got a lot on her plate at the moment, however, so when Paul discovers the 300-year-old ghost of a small boy in the house, he decides not to involve her in the case. The boy, named Eagle of the Sun, says he’s searching for his missing mother. Paul’s happy to help Eagle of the Sun find her, though something about the boy’s story doesn’t add up. But why would a lost little ghost lie?

Includes a preview of the next Haunted Guesthouse Mystery, Chance of a Ghost, available February 2013.

What happened?

I have really enjoyed this series, but this book was completely awful. What happened to Amanda Ranconi as narrator??? The guy who did this book was just awful. I tried to think if it was him that ruined the whole book for me, but NO, he just made it worse. When we find out the truth about the little boy, it's like, "...Seriously....? You're kidding, right?" The entire book was a travesty.

Racist pile of garbage!

Wow this was such a disappointment after the first 3 that I enjoyed. This story, however, jumps straight into full blown racist garbage!

It appears the author couldn't be bothered to consult an actual living, breathing, still existing, Indigenous person before writing this garbage, but instead appears to have spent 2 seconds googeling stuff. As an actual, living, breathing , still existing Native American this is beyond disappointing, if not unexpected by a white author.

From declaring the boys mom is an "Indian Princess" not a thing!!!at all!!! to claiming the boy was behaving suspiciously because he wasn't playing with racist "Cowboys and Indians "toys, including an Indian Headdress. As if any Indigenous child would ever!!!

I am honestly so furious I can't even fully form words for what all is wrong with this hot mess!

Indigenous children are raised to respect regalia and would never carelessly play with it. The stereo typical racist toys he refers to would not have been traditional dress for the Indiginous people of that area, so stating he should recognize them is utter crap. And any Indigenous kid would avoid racist harmful toys like a pox infected blanket!

I just love how the author flat out states Canadians never harmed Indigenous people, flat out lie! From Boarding schools to current Mi'kmaq events, Canada's history with Indigenous peoples is just as brutally horrific as the United States.

Oh goodness and the crap about social structure and women being powerless, hah! I am Diné so of course our traditions differ, but most Indiginous cultures are matriarchal, so if women were left out of the history it was purely due to colonizers purposefully leaving women out, as well as idiots like this author perpetrating this crap.

And don't get me started on the horrifically racist names of the Indigenous charecters and the horrific "accent" the narrator uses for the Indigenous charecters that is flat out the most racist thing he must have been able to come up with. Come on! Could you even be any more stereo typically harmful???

I can't believe in this century this sort crap is still thought to be acceptable!

Two points.

For aurhors, Indigenous people still exist, consult the people you are writing about before you even think about writing about us!

Second, for Audible, get an actual Indigenous narrator to read Indigenous parts! Not that anyone would have taken on the job of reading this garbage!

What a horrible choice for me to attempt to listen to durring Native American Heritage Month (or any time!)

Please list more writen by actual Indigenous authors and less racist garbage like this. And can we please get a Featured month like other Minorities get? In the age of CNN calling us "Something Else" Audible is choosing to do further harm rather than do better.

Good story, weak performance.

What made the experience of listening to A Wild Ghost Chase the most enjoyable?

It is another good E.J. Copperman story. Great for a short trip, and for a slight change of pace.

What other book might you compare A Wild Ghost Chase to and why?

The other four Haunted Guesthouse Mystery books (I got out of order on my listening). I am very much enjoying the story line and the characters, but mostly because I don't have to turn off the sound or yell "migraine" when children are around, great work E.J. Copperman, whoever you are.

What didn’t you like about James Patrick Cronin’s performance?

As he was portraying Paul, a tall (6 foot plus) +- 225 lbs Private Eye, he shouldn't sound like he is 5'5" and around 145 lbs. He totally missed the mark with Alison, way to curt in her mannerisms, no matter how busy the story had her. Maxie was almost unrecognizable. But the worst of all was the grandmother (Loretta?). The actor made her sound like she was over 90, shuffling around with a walker, this book was not written in or about the late 60's when people were old at 65. Stereo typing isn't cool.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

A lot of things may change when you leave this life, but somethings don't.

Any additional comments?

If the powers to be decide to make another audible book with Paul as the narrator, please find an actor that will be true to the story line and not make it a stand alone piece.

New-voice-for-Paul-please

The narrator sounded like he was reading-not like he was telling a story. (Very choppy speech. Hard to listen.)

Don't waste your credits

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I don't think anyone into the series is going to enjoy it. The narrator does such a poor job, it is really unpleasant to listen to. I lasted 10 minutes.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Another book in the series.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator was changed, so I suppose everything is fixed. :D

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment and anger. Listeners love audio books. It goes without saying a reader should be chosen carefuly.

The choice of narator does nothing to aid this . .

The choice of narrator does nothing to aid this book, after the first two books being read by the wonderful Amanda Ronconi they change narrators in this book.

I understand the book is mainly from Paul's point of view, however the other main characters are still present and unfortunately this narrator's style & treatment not only presents them differently but the voices are a total disconnect from the previous books.

Aside from the fact that I believe Amanda Ronconi has captured the characters and presented this series in the tone the Author meant it to be conveyed better than this narrator and his style, this book really gives the reader very little extra insight into the lead or any other characters. Its only redeeming factor in my opinion is the twist at the end

It's not a bad book as such and if the narration is ignored could be of interest to lovers of this author or series

I would say give it a miss for now and read it later but I don't know if the events portrayed end up being referred to in future novels, and even if they did I think it world only be in a minor way.

Thankfully Amanda Ronconi make a welcome return in the next book .

Unexpected Ending

You don't have to listen to this one to get the series. The narrator's timing is off, and it is told from the perspective of the male ghost. I suspect this one would have been better just read. You don't learn enough about him to make it worthwhile, but the ending was interesting. I never really do figure out the end of her books.

Who is this guy?!?

I won't be finishing this book because I cannot get into the bad narration. WHY did the narrator change? Did you think that wouldn't matter? I don't even recognize these characters. No thanks. This narrator ruined the rest of the series for me.

Loved the new POV

I read other reviews that the “new” narrator was terrible, but I really enjoyed hearing one of my fave romance narrators take on the voice of Paul in this novella. I thought he did a great job with hitting the voices of Paul, Melissa, Allison and Maxie that had been set in tone in prior novels from Allison’s POV (though would have appreciated a toned down version of his Loretta). Having the male narrator reminded me that I was getting a story directly from Paul’s POV, which I also enjoyed as the different POV added some depth to his character for me in the other books from the series. I thought it was a nice addition to the series.

Good story and narration..

The only reason I got this novella was because of the narrator. Why anyone thought the other narrator was so great is beyond me. Who the heck wants to hear a man that sounds just like a girl? There are some really good female narrators, ones that can actually make a hero sound like a man. Unlike Amanda Ronconi, every male in the story sounds sooo feminine, and that doesn't make her a good narrator. I always avoid books that she narrates.

This was a good story about a ghost private investigator who was trying to find a ghost-boy's mother.

As for the narration: James Patrick Cronin did a fabulous job and the female voices and his emotions when he read. I would definitely listen to him again.

Awful voices! thankful it was a short story

On the whole not a bad story in the series, a little different looking from Paul the ghosts perspective.
Biggest problem was the voices, Melissa who is supposed to be 10 sounded more like a middle aged woman who smokes 40 cigarettes a day. The grandma sounded like a cross between Joda and Alec Guinness.

Narration spoilt

Prefer Amanda Ronconie as narrator, not used to hearing the stories through a male voice all the characters sounded wrong but overall a great little story that kept me spellbound for an afternoon of ironing.

Interesting short story

Having listened to the previous books in this series I wasn't keen on the change of narrator. I didn't see the point of the story being told from Paul's point of view. The reading was monotonous and stilted. It would be an ideal voice for relaxation exercises. In fact, I nodded off several times and had to replay. I hated the way he voiced Loretta; she came across very differently from the character I was beginning to get to know. The plot was well thought out.

Good little story, had potential to be great.

It was interesting hearing a story from Paul's point of view. This could of been the opportunity for full on fun, it could of been more noir. There was a fantastic episode of Castle set in the 1950s. I would of recorded this as Paul thinking of himself as a 1950s private dic with Maxi as his secretary and the other characters as 1950s versions of themselves. James was ok as the narrator but not great, if he had really hammed it up and just had fun with the book. I strongly believe that you enjoy the book as much as the narrator. If they are enjoying it you will. What would of been great if you had James playing Paul and Amanda Ronconi playing the other characters?

A Very Different Ghost Story

Different narrator

This book was written from the perspective of Paul the ghost, so the narrator was male. It was also about one sixth length of the other novels. His impression of Loretta made her sound 98 years old and there was no humour at all, unlike when Alison narrates. It felt like a spin-off. No charm, no compare.

Thoroughly enjoyed the storyline but the narration was terrible! I can only hope that it was the narrator’s first book and that he will get better if he does more. He didn’t do Paul justice, which is a shame.

A Beautiful Short Story

This short story is a lovely interlude between much longer and sometimes “heavier”books, James Patrick Cronin is an excellent narrator and does the voices so well.
