Publisher's Summary

On the surface, Anise seems to have it all: a successful career, a solid marriage, and good friends. But when she applies for a promotion at work, she loses out to a white colleague who isn't nearly as qualified for the job. However, the problem at work is only the beginning of Anise's troubles.

After being married for four seemingly blissful years, she discovers that her husband is having an affair. And to make matters worse, her best friend at work is keeping dangerous secrets. But Anise is no quitter. As brave as she is determined, she reaches deep inside her soul to find the strength and courage to overcome heartbreak and stay her course. Ultimately, she will discover that what is worth having is worth fighting for - in her career and, most important, in her heart.

Contains mature themes.

Great story! Issues still exist

I enjoyed this story. The opposition that the main character faced is real! So many times people are passed over for promotions because the powers at be let personal feelings sway their decision.

Great book and excellent narration

Great book and narration. It hit on quite a few reality topics with discrimination in the work place. A must read

Great writer, missed the mark

Although I love Lawson Roby, this story was a disappointment. It was too simplistic. The plot was weak with an anti climactic ending. As for the performance, one of the worst I have heard. One reading doing male and female voices but always pretty monotone. It was a struggle to listen to the entire novel.

The Truth in Corporate America

This book outlines exactly what happens to women and minorities in Corporate America even in 2016.
Sad but true.......

not highly recommended

I overrated this book. the reader not very good at differentiating between voices. I could not listen to the story while my kids were in the car because it had so much vulgarity. the characters are found to be quite annoying and wishy-washy. Ending made no sense and it felt as though it was leading up to another story or another chapter. I would not recommend this book but that is just my opinion.

Rushed ending

It was so detailed all through the whole book and then gets to the apologue and just rushes through and ties everything up in a nice little bowl with a whole bunch of unanswered questions. So I would hope there will be a continuation in the future. Would like to know what happened to Lorna, The outcome between Frank and Anise, Did her mom ever meet a good man? So many unanswered questions especially ones surrounding the company She worked for. Disappointed
