For over 40 years, Carlos Castaneda’s The Teachings of Don Juan has inspired audiences to expand their world view beyond traditional Western forms. Originally published as Castaneda’s master’s thesis in anthropology, Teachings documents Castaneda’s supposed apprenticeship with a Yaqui Indian sorcerer, don Juan Matus. Dividing the work into two sections, Castaneda begins by describing don Juan’s philosophies, then continues with his own reflections.

Story
Carlos Castaneda takes the listener into the very heart of sorcery, challenging both imagination and reason, shaking the very foundations of our belief in what is “natural” and “logical”. His landscape is full of terrors and mysterious forces, as sharply etched as a flash of lightning on the deserts and mountains where don Juan takes him to pursue the sorcerer’s knowledge - the knowledge that it is the Eagle that gives us, at our births, a spark of awareness, that it expects to reclaim at the end of our lives and which the sorcerer, through his discipline, fights to retain.

Story
For us to perceive any of the worlds that exist beside our own, not only do we have to covet them but we need to have sufficient energy to seize them. In this revolutionary book, Carlos Castaneda offers listeners the key to this energetic conditioning for the first time, revealing a series of body positions and physical movements that enabled various sorcerers to navigate their own sorceric journeys. By sharing this wisdom, Carlos Castaneda makes it possible for listeners to travel to some of these other realms, which are as real, unique, absolute, and engulfing as our own world.

Story
In 1968 Carlos Castaneda burst onto the scene with his blockbuster story about his apprenticeship with an awesome, authentic Mexican sorcerer, don Juan. Roaming the deserts of Mexico, he participated in the cultivation and use of "power plants", psychedelic drugs he felt were making him lose his mind. As an apprentice of sorcery practiced for thousands of years, he survived a leap from a cliff and watched a sorcerer dance across a waterfall. Along the way, he shared with us long-lost secrets about death, dreaming, our other self, and the vast and inexplicable forces of the universe.

Who am I, if not my heart? A close encounter with the mysterious force field universally known as the white light, triggers a series of catalytic awakenings that deliver radical insights into what it means to be alive. In sharing these revelatory seeds of consciousness, Lujan invites us to openly examine bias and discover where our alignments are leading us. Incalculable variables of vibration define our reality from A to Z. In a rapidly changing technological and social context, it is now time we took a very close look at the pervasive influence of frequency upon our perception and behavior, both individually and collectively. To be governed by heart awareness within our personal application to the world is how we can reassign our attention to what actually matters.

Terence McKenna hypothesizes that as the North African jungles receded, giving way to savannas and grasslands near the end of the most recent ice age, a branch of our arboreal primate ancestors left the forest canopy and began living in the open areas beyond. There they experimented with new varieties of foods as they adapted, physically and mentally, to the environment. Among the new foods found in this environment were psilocybin-containing mushrooms.

Simply Incredible, Impassioned Natration
What a wonderful follow through from the Teachings of Don Juan. The narrator is so stunning and really carries the baton into this second book, fluidly tying in the previous story. The subtleties of the narration and Castaneda’s exquisite account start to reveal themselves. Bravo! I can see this being adapted into a badass Netflix series [or rather hopefully, the tale stays underground].

Unreal, exotic, interesting, superb writing
I knew Carlos Castaneda's graduate professor at UCLA. He told me he never doubted CC's experiences. They were not made up stories, they were authentic. Then a nurse friend of mind told she frequently saw CC at a psychological clinic at UCLA. She assumed he was struggling and visited frequently for help. After reading all the Don Juan books I felt as if I understood CC'd experiences. I wondered if different types of psychoactive plants had been consumed, but not mentioned in his writings due to his professors or that his readers would find ingestion of drugs to mean his experiences were not real. This would be a shame if the reader felt this way, CC was being a cultural anthropologist and ethnologist who expressed his experiences quite well. I felt fortunate to understand more about Mexican Indian traditions, ways of life and a true rendition of CC's dedication to understanding the sorcerers lives.

Not for everyone, but everyone could learn from it
What did you love best about A Separate Reality?
Luis Moreno is a very good, engrossing narrator for the Castaneda books. Of course, it can't hurt that I am totally enthralled by the story and experiences portrayed.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Yes, more laughter than tears but there were experiences at both extremes.
Any additional comments?
This is a very powerful story and while I disagree, some extreme religious readers may find too much issue with the perspective portrayed to get the real meaning and truth behind the story.
