Story
Sylas Runewulf has been dead for about a month, but he's making the best of it. The former battle-hardened swordsman is now a brewer and pub owner in the town of Ember Hollow. He's also made a few friends here in the Underworld. Plus, he has a pet in Patches the cat, and he recently bought a farm, complete with a peppy pup named Cornbread. Not bad for someone who once lived and died by the blade.

Story
Pete is a simple man who enjoys a good drink amongst good friends. Not too much to ask, right? Now, he's trapped in a fantasy world far from home, stuck underground and inside the body of a smelly dwarf with fantastic facial hair. The worst part? The swill that the dwarves are falling all over themselves to drink. It's flat, it's watery, and it has the alcohol content of a rancid coconut. Can Pete save the dwarves from their own sour fate, or will he be forever doomed to plink his pickaxe away in hopes that he hits the motherlode?

Story
The usual result of a human taking a runaway semitruck head-on is a very sudden, very fast track to the pearly gates. But for one newly noncorporeal man, there's another option: become a dungeon. Feeling sorry for the desperate angel assigned to him, the man relents. Heck, if it doesn't work out, he can always chat with Saint Peter about it later. Next thing you know, he's a dungeon. Admittedly, a small run-down, somewhat unimpressive dungeon (more of a house, actually), but you gotta start somewhere, right?

Story
Henry already died once. Does he really need to do it again? Now he's a skeleton with a stat sheet, skills, and an insatiable desire to kill humans. Lurking in the very depths of his bleached skull, some remnant of his old self still remains—and it wants to break free just as badly as Henry wants to figure out how he's a skeleton in the first place. And Henry isn't the only one. Other skeletons are gaining sentience all over Jallfoss. Is there any way back? Any way to break the curse that holds all of Jallfoss in its icy grip?

Publisher's summary
Death is only the beginning for one warrior as he encounters adventure, friendship, and romance in the afterlife in the epic first book of this cozy LitRPG.
There are three levels to the afterlife. The best level is the Celestial Plains at the top. At the bottom is the worst level, known as the Chasm. And in between lies the Underworld. That’s where Sylas Runewulf, a brave soldier who gave everything to his kingdom, finds himself after he dies.
Following the guidance of a mysterious blue prompt, Sylas journeys to the town of Ember Hollow to breathe new life into a quaint local pub. Along the way, he meets a clever apothecary named Mira, who helps him acclimate to the ins and outs of the realm, and Patches, a corpulent cat who’s slightly . . . shall we say, unusual.
Dubbing the pub “The Old Lamplighter,” Sylas hopes it will be a safe haven for other weary souls. Of course, it doesn’t feel that safe when the prompt reappears with a warning: [You have 89 days until the invasion.]
As Sylas works to decipher the troubling message, he faces more challenges, travels far and wide, and befriends wayward demons, magical creatures, and lost warriors. He also builds a community around his humble pub—one that he must soon defend, or they’ll all face a fate much worse than death . . .
Blending fantasy LitRPG with a slice-of-life story about starting over, A Pub in the Underworld is the first adventure in Harmon Cooper’s Cozy Abyss series. Join Sylas and Patches on their charming journey of discovery, friendship, and defense against the unknown in a world where even the smallest decision could shape the fate of a community caught between realms.

All of this changes once he is mysteriously portaled to the fantasy world of Genera, where he accidently becomes a barbarian. Yes, accidently. It's complicated. After joining forces with a magical yet neurodivergent spellbook named Clovis, Randy finds his stride battling monsters, facing insane challenges, and solving tricky puzzles in an effort to reach the top of a tower.

Everyone with the gift is going to the academy. Not me. I'll master magic my own way. School was a chore. All I wanted was to become a magus, enter the academy, and train my chosen affinity. But I didn't pass the test. They said I didn't have it in me. Years later, a run-in with a sassy goth mage named Misty revealed I could do magic. Those damn monocle-wearing pseudo-Victorians at the academy locked me out! Screw them.

I was a Hunter, and I honored the Code. For my services to humanity and for leading a "proper" life, I was to be rewarded. A new life after death, and a new world to give me some well-deserved rest. But something went wrong. Once again, I must fight. The Monsters that face me here are far more terrifying than those of my past life. They are cleverer, crueler, more unpredictable. Chase had it all planned out. Do a little time in one of the emperor's jails, say a four-year stretch, for getting rid of some trash that no one would miss, and when he got out, the path to leadership would be wide open. Unfortunately, his bastard of a father, the same one who left his mother to die in poverty and him to run wild on the streets, took an interest. Seeing him sitting on the bench when his case went to court was a shock. But not as big a shock as being sentenced to ten years in the Imperial Navy.

pretty good
Enjoyed the story and performance a lot. Only thing I would gripe about is that a number of the creatures the MC fought didn't have any description to them. We weren't really give a description for some of the few that were fought, but through how the combat occurred we'd learn that it had claws or something like that. I would have liked to see more of a description of the creature either before or during those kinds of scenes.

Wait for the series to complete
Mr. Wolf does an excellent job with the various characters in the book, that is a pleasure. This book left me with a feeling of being incomplete. We have no idea what the invasion is even after the "big" battle towards the end of the book nor after the MC seeing another character, who is supposed to be able to figure these things out, who can't tell him what the invasion prompt is that the MC gets every morning. Something I find exceedingly annoying is the repeated use of the word "also" in place of a conjunction or a better transitional word or words at the beginning of a sentence. Doing so is just lazy writing, especially as many of the word processors can assist in finding better wording. In the author's defense, this seems to be common in so many of the books in this genre.

So I am not at all into LitRPG books, but this one sounded interesting and I absolutely LOVE Matthew Wolf as a narrator. I DEVOURED this book. I loved it so, so, so much and didn't even mind the more game-y stuff in it. Only thing I'm mad at now is I have to wait until September for the next one!!

I really enjoyed this cozy fantasy by Harmon Cooper. Matthew Wolf does a great job with the narration, and I really loved the story. It has great characters (especially Patches), and just the right amount of crafting and adventure to keep the story interesting and fun. Can't wait for Book 2!
