Publisher's summary

Ellie Wold can't wait to graduate from high school. She and Andrew Bjorklund have been waiting to get married since...well, since forever, and in June they will finally wed. When Andrew announces they have to postpone the wedding, she's disappointed but takes it in stride--there must be a good reason, or Andrew's pa wouldn't ask it of them. But Andrew is angry and can't understand why Ellie isn't upset too, especially when they'd been planning to "marry up" ever since they were in grade school. Disgruntled, he works out his frustration in stubborn determination to finish building their barn and mail-order house, working himself to exhaustion. But just when the new house is nearly finished, an unthinkable tragedy occurs. Throwing aside the vow he made to Ellie, Andrew seeks revenge. As their plans unravel, it looks as if their love may not survive.

Early 1900s and a House from Sears and Roebuck

What a joy listening to A Promise for Ellie! My first book by this author, but not my last! Clean and refreshing, Norwegian settlers in North Dakota, where young Ellie Wold and Andrew Bjorklund have grown up together in the town of Blessing . . . until a few years earlier when Ellie's father had moved the family to Grafton, an hour by train, in order to further his furniture making business . . . Andrew continued to farm, and both Ellie and Andrew continued to go to high school, awaiting graduation, when, by the grace of God they planned to be married . . . when a delay in the delivery of their house from Sears and Roebuck causes Andrew's father, Haakan, to ask the young couple to delay their wedding, and seek the Lord's guidance, Andrew grows angry and impatient . . . the months that follow are trying times for the couple and both families . . . but He gives us beauty for ashes . . . I was deeply touched by the gentle, growing love between Ellie and Andrew and the wealth of wisdom in the people in the town of Blessing . . . the narration was excellent, especially the pronunciation of the unique Norwegian dialect, which was at times funny and sweet . . .
