All of Mattie Lyon's hopes and dreams are riding on her summer job at the Glennmore Hotel. She'll make enough money to go to college in the fall. She'll prove to her father that she is responsible. She'll learn how to survive in the sophisticated world beyond her dad's brokeback farm. But all her plans fall to pieces when a young woman turns up drowned in the lake. Only Mattie knows that her death is a murder.

An astonishing and heartbreaking story set in 1906, this novel will take its place beside To Kill a Mockingbird, Little Women, and other classics that hark back to times of lost innocence.

This was Definitely worth the read. Sad but thoughtful. Descriptive and good character development. Tragic story.

Well written and well narrated.

I loved this book. It has enough mystery and intrigue to keep the adult listenter interested, but is also suitable for the younger listener as well. Highly enjoyable.

I love the fact, that Jennifer writes, in the view of a woman and make them strong and not give up! Making a stand, Making young women, that, we can be anything, just never give up!!

The fact that it takes faith inside, the ability to stand tall as women!!

The story contains a lot of interesting historic detail of rural life in northern New York State at the turn of the century.
But the fictional framework was a total cliché - nothing more just the usual feminist portrayal of the misery of marriage and having babies… any woman with half a brain will never be truly happy unless she shucks off family and tradition and the always at fault white male and strikes out on her own in the big city, etcetera and etcetera

Hope Davis’s excellent narration

This book was a little hard to get into at first, but I found it enjoyable after the first hour or so. I also felt like a lot of the story was a rip off of Little Women and Anne of Green Gables. Even so, it was still a good read.

enjoyable

An intelligent, thoughtful, warm, caring treatise on life, promises and possiblities.

Prequel to Jane Austen's "Persuasion"
