Lisa Wingate has been favorably compared to authors Nicholas Sparks and Richard Paul Evans.

In A Month of Summer, Hanna Beth has been caring for her aging husband - who suffers from Alzheimer's - and her developmentally challenged adult son for years on her own. But when she suffers a stroke, estranged stepdaughter Rebecca must take the reins. As she cares for her father and the step-brother she's barely met, Rebecca slowly begins to heal both herself and her family.

Would you listen to A Month of Summer again? Why?

I may listen to this one again in a few months. The plot is tightly woven and the characters are realistic.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I suppose I'd never thought about what it must be like to be a stroke victim, as Hannah Beth is. This particular character made the whole experience of struggling for words, struggling to be understood and grasping for movement and improvement understandable. I don't think I'll ever forget it. Rebecca also is a sympathetic character - someone living with resentment and hurt who is forced to confront what she believes to be true and having to choose to either stay where she is emotionally or letting go of the past and learning to live life on other terms. There are so many other characters I could mention - Teddy, Claude, Mary - not enough space, though. You'll have to listen/read the book for yourself.

Enjoyable and Thought Provoking

I’m struggling a little to express how good this book is. The depth of the characters and the wisdom of a couple of them is a learning experience. It’s a beautiful story.

Something else!

I wished this book never ended. As with all Lisa Wingate books, this one is a lovely, and hit my heart so hard. My mom suffered several strokes before she passed away. My grandmother suffered from dementia for over 20 years before her passing. So much of this is exactly what our family struggled with in those years. My son has autism and he and Teddy have a lot of the same traits. It was like listening to parts of my own plight. I started this book yesterday and just couldn’t hit stop. Someone mentioned this book was boring. That certainly wasn’t my experience. And don’t get me started on the exquisite narrative. Beautifully written, warmly and thoughtfully told.

Beautiful narration!

the narration was fantastic! the story may be a bit slow in the beginning, but the rest of the story makes it worthwhile.

A fast moving story of seemingly insurmountable family problems and long hidden secrets. Never dull. You will care about these very believable and forgivable characters.

Wonderful story

Beautifully crafted, every word contributed to the visions, emotions and characterizations of the story. Trust - both kept and broken - dealt with honestly and frankly. A magnificent portrayal of family, frailty and hope. I loved every page!

Once again Lisa Wingate treats us to a complex yet heartwarming story of a woman seeking understanding of who she is, discovering the important things in life along the way. Johanna Parker is so creative and with the voices she uses the reader finds herself pulled into the story. I was truly disappointed that the story ended! I wanted more.
