Publisher's Summary

Number one New York Times best-selling author Charlaine Harris returns with the second of the Gunnie Rose series, in which Lizbeth is hired onto a new crew, transporting a crate into Dixie, the self-exiled southeast territory of the former United States. What the crate contains is something so powerful, that forces from across three territories want to possess it.

In this second thrilling installment of the Gunnie Rose series, Lizbeth Rose is hired onto a new crew for a seemingly easy protection job, transporting a crate into Dixie, just about the last part of the former United States of America she wants to visit. But what seemed like a straight-forward job turns into a massacre as the crate is stolen. Up against a wall in Dixie, where social norms have stepped back into the last century, Lizbeth has to go undercover with an old friend to retrieve the crate as what's inside can spark a rebellion, if she can get it back in time.

Number-one New York Times best-selling author Charlaine Harris (Sookie Stackhouse mysteries and Midnight, Texas trilogy) is at her best here, building the world of this alternate history of the United States, where magic is an acknowledged but despised power.

Loved it but....

I love this series. Finished both books in two days and I think that’s the only thing that bothers me, the shortness. I hope I don’t wait two years for another one. 🥺

More please!

I need more books like this. I’ve missed Charlaine Harris. I gave her a break after Midnight, and I had forgotten why I was such a huge fan. I don’t know why, I’ve read almost everything she’s written and loved it. I hope we get as many of these as the Sookie books, not as few as the Midnight.
She is one of my favorite writers and her words are crack to me. And the narrator was fantastic. She brought Gunny Rose to life.

Another great series by Charlaine Harris

In the manner of Shakespeare’s series with a badass female lead. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

love this series

I have both read and listened to a great many of Charlaine Harris books. This series is my favorite. I think I would feel that way if I read it as a physical book, rather than listened, however, this is one of the best pairing of writer to narrator I have experienced. When the pairing is well made a new book emerges as experience and the delite makes it hard to find where merit actually settles. The narrator picked a pace and control of the words that suits the gritty tone of the book. Charlaine Harris always delivers an adequate story and usually enough complexity in relationships to keep readers attentive to the words. The skill gives her latitude to be preposterous in story because the focus of her talent is both motion and stillness. Following her lead allows for surprise, fun, and sometimes a new look at human. This series is certainly bold in many directions and she has the skill to take the risk and deliver the story. Writer and narrator create an experience rather than just a story competing for attention with all other stories. It is a little more like music remembered with other songs. I will admit this story is of lesser impact than the first. Middle of a series is both a coming and going, so it is expected to serve as a bridge. I really hope this series goes on and on rather than reaching a destination in the next book.

Are you ready Lizbeth?

NUMBER OF HEARTS: 4
A Longer Fall is the second installment of Charlaine Harris’ Gunnie Rose series.

A Longer Fall picks up a few months after the end of An Easy Death. We catch up with Lizbeth Rose (aka Gunnie Rose) and her new crew of Gunnies. We find them on a train headed to Dixie with a package. Dixie is not a place the Lizbeth would normally want to be but the package needs to be delivered. What should have been an easy sit on the box and deliver turns out to be not so lucky for the Lucky Crew. A train derailment leads Lizbeth and her crew facing enemy after enemy. But in the midst of all the chaos a familiar face emerges. One Lizbeth never thought she would ever see again.

Eva Kaminsky does a great job again bring these characters to life. I really enjoyed having her read this story to me. I do hope that she stays on for the rest of this series.

I really enjoyed this book and I am already looking forward to the next installment in this series. Lizbeth is a great character and I enjoy watching her grow as a person. I have high hopes for what might come next in this series.

Note: I would recommend reading this series in order. I think you could read book two without book one but there is a lot of history that you will miss if you don’t.

Great book!

Love this series! Cant wait for next one. Wish more of these books were around when i was younger. Gunnie Rose is an intelligent and practical woman not only to figure things out but quickly too. Might not even like her if i met her but i can admire her independence, courage and integrity.

Gunnie Rose delivers in her 2nd book

Lizbeth is a mixture of solid work ethic and mythical talents as she delivers on her contract against stout odds. She meets up again with her employer from "An Easy Death", who is also looking for the crate lost by the "Lucky" crew. Nothing is as it seems in Dixie and time is running out for Gunnie Rose to finish her job successfully.

This is a series I enjoy and am looking forward to book # 3. While book 2 left me with a number of questions, the narrator Eva Kaminsky did an excellent job of bring the book to life.
