A no-holds-barred battle between Good and Evil....

Eight centuries ago, the first Knight of the Word was commissioned to combat the demonic evil of the Void. Now that daunting legacy has passed to John Ross - along with powerful magic and the knowledge that his actions are all that stand between a living hell and humanity's future.

Then, after decades of service to the Word, an unspeakable act of violence shatters John Ross' weary faith. Haunted by guilt, he turns his back on his dread gift, settling down to build a normal life, untroubled by demons and nightmares.

But a fallen Knight makes a tempting prize for the Void, which could bend the Knight's magic to its own evil ends. And once the demons on Ross' trail track him to Seattle, neither he nor anyone close to him will be safe. His only hope is Nest Freemark, a college student who wields an extraordinary magic all her own. Five years earlier, Ross had aided Nest when the future of humanity rested upon her choice between Word and Void. Now Nest must return the favor. She must restore Ross' faith, or his life - and hers - will be forfeit....

loved how Terry Brooks brought magic to the northwest setting. And characters are the same and you meet new ones. Just wished the character stuck around Portland than just passing through.

great story

The second book in the series starts out with a tale of the tragic hero who needs rescuing. Well tied in with the first book. This could stand on its own merit but helps alot if you are familiar with book one. At least for some a the climactic points in the book. A little bothered by different pronunciations of characters between 2 different orators. All in all a very good listen!

Drama, suspense, with a little twist

Storyline took a while to get going and could be a little confusing, but everything wrapped up nicely in the end.

i really enjoyed the character growth of John Ross and Nest Freemark. This story also seemed to have a different feel about it than previous ones I've listened to. I felt as if i was with John and Nest on this journey.

Best story yet in my opinion.

Enjoyed the book immensely. The reader is clearly not a local, but reads well.

Scary how much this book relates to current events

A great sequel to "Running with the Demon". Long live Terry Brooks! Mark Deakins does a great job narrating.

I have listened to and enjoyed the previous audio version of this book (George Wilson), but was disappointed that only Running with the Demon was available on audible--until now.

At first listen, the multiple pauses of the new reader was extremely distracting. I actually changed the playback speed to 1.25x to counteract it. He does an adequate job once I got past the first 12-15 minutes with the exception of how he pronounced O'olish Amaneh's name--that was cringeworthy.

The three books in this series are some of my favorites. I've read them several times since being in my twenties. Nest Freemark, her grandparents, and John Ross are very relatable, and their storylines are enjoyable.

Despite my initial misgivings, I would recommend this book, and it's prequel, Running with the Demon. I hope audible will make the sequel, Angel Fire East, available too.

Yay! More The Word and The Void

It’s been 10 years since the incident in Hopewell. In Seattle we are have found a John Ross who has renounced the Word. He works for a homeless shelter. The only problem is the Word has not forgotten him. Neither has Void...which is a breath away from owning his very soul.

A knight of the Word.

I’m happy with the continued weaving of a long story! I’m enjoying this series. I’m looking forward to the next book.
