Publisher's summary

A murdered priest leaves behind records of confessional secrets. Secrets someone would prefer he took to the grave.

A small town in the English countryside isolated by a severe storm, and a young female officer, alone and out of her depth. A troubled priest is brutally murdered, leaving behind a journal of the residents' confessional secrets; secrets certain people would have preferred he took to the grave.

As word spreads, the pressure rises as the eyes of the town watch her every move. With no forensic team, no support, and a savage killer hiding in a turbulent town, is PC Sarah Gladstone up to the task?

Good listen on a long road trip

I love ALL British Crime, Detective, and Mystery shows available to the US via Public Television. The heroin in this story is less confident and sure of herself, which was the biggest disappointment in my opinion. I like a kick-ass confident S/hero type, that isn’t constantly second guessing herself. This one is a “victim of circumstance” in so many ways, inferior to men by size, lower in rank to men, made victim by the town gossip, the town drunk, the town bully, & the random rogue live news reporter, and of course, the bad guy.

A Decent Beginning of a New Series

Sarah Gladstone is a new character for a murder mystery series. With that, I hope we will be growing along with her. As a police officer/ young detective, she is rash, emotional, and easily swayed. However, I guess that many characters start in such a raw condition.

The reader was OK, but didn't have a very wide range of voices for the characters, and her delivery was a bit monotone. Overall, though, she didn't detract from the story.

I thought the author left many story lines unfollowed, such as the whole press fiasco, which was a major plot point for our protagonist. It is not like they left untied as a teaser for a future book, they were just dropped.

All that said, I think this was a good start for a series, and I will be looking for the next book about Sarah Gladstone. I recommend checking out this series beginning book.
