This accessible and engaging new edition continues to be one of the leading introductory textbooks on Korean history. Fully revised throughout, the author takes a thematic and chronological approach to guide listeners from early state formation and the dynastic eras to the modern experience. Episodic accounts in each chapter are discussed in context with extensive examination of how the events and themes under consideration have been viewed up to the present day. By discussing recurring themes such as collective identity, external influence, social hierarchy, and family and gender, the author introduces the major historical events, patterns, and debates that have shaped both North and South Korea over the past 1,500 years.

This textbook is essential for undergraduate and postgraduate students of history and those studying Korean or Asian history in particular. The first half of the book covers the pre-20th-century era, and the second half covers the modern era, reflecting the structure of most Korean history courses.

Great overview of Korean history! Narrator had a bit of an odd cadence. Content was great.

Despite growing up in one of the most diverse states (California), my otherwise excellent public education completely failed to teach more than Eurocentric history. This book is an informative introduction to Korean history with helpful insights drawn on how history continues to shape the present. As consistently noted by other reviewers, the narrator’s mispronunciation greatly detracted from the listening and learning experience. Informative survey of Korean history

Far too much emphasis on the most recent history. Heavy long winded condemnation of South Korean conservatives and barely a mention of North Korea's miscreants. Read this book. But also find another book of Korean history for balance.

A Biased Story

This is the worst narration I have ever had from Audible. It makes hard to enjoy the book content.

Content is ok but narration is bad
