Story
When Kristi stopped drinking, she started noticing things. Like when you give up a debilitating habit, it leaves a space, one that can’t easily be filled by mocktails or ice cream or sex or crafting. And when you cancel Rosé Season for yourself, you’re left with just summer, and that’s when you notice that the women around you are tanked - that alcohol is the oil in the motors that keeps them purring when they could be making other kinds of noise. In her sharp, incisive debut essay collection, Coulter reveals a portrait of a life in transition.

A memoir of unblinking honesty and poignant, laugh-out-loud humor, Blackout is the story of a woman stumbling into a new kind of adventure - the sober life she never wanted. For Sarah Hepola, alcohol was "the gasoline of all adventure". She spent her evenings at cocktail parties and dark bars where she proudly stayed till last call. But there was a price. Publicly, she covered her shame with self-deprecating jokes, and her career flourished, but as the blackouts accumulated, she could no longer avoid a sinking truth.

Thompson wanted to get wasted with me... these are my fantasies lately. Too bad I've gone sober. When Sacha Z. Scoblic was drinking, she was a rock star; the days were rough and the nights filled with laughter and blackouts. Then she gave it up. She had to. Story
What could possibly be “lucky” about addiction? Absolutely nothing, thought Laura McKowen when drinking brought her to her knees. As she puts it, she “kicked and screamed . . . wishing for something - anything - else” to be her issue. The people who got to drink normally, she thought, were so damn lucky. But in the midst of early sobriety, when no longer able to anesthetize her pain and anxiety, she realized that she was actually the lucky one. Lucky to feel her feelings, live honestly, really be with her daughter, change her legacy.

In a culture where sipping "rosé all day" is seen as the epitome of relaxation, "grabbing a drink" the only way to network; and meeting at a bar the quintessential "first date", many of us are left wondering if drinking alcohol really is the only way to cultivate joy and connection in life. Jardine Libaire and Amanda Eyre Ward wanted to live spontaneous and luxurious lives, to escape the ordinary and enjoy the intoxicating. Their drinking, however, had started to numb them to the present moment instead of unlocking it.

Publisher's Summary
When Rebecca Weller’s pounding, dehydrated head woke her at 3:00 am, yet again, she stared at the ceiling, wondering why the hell she kept doing this to herself.
At 39 years of age - and a health coach, no less - she knew better than to down several bottles of wine per week. Her increasingly dysfunctional relationship with alcohol had to stop, but after decades of social drinking, she was terrified of what that might mean.
How could she live a joyful existence, without alcohol? How would she relax, socialize, or celebrate - without wine?
In sheer frustration, on a morning filled with regret and tears, she embarks on a three-month sobriety experiment that becomes a quest for self-discovery, and ultimately, transforms her entire world.
A Happier Hour is a heartfelt, moving, and inspiring story for anyone who has ever had to give up something they loved in order to get what they truly wanted.

Fabulous Times Yet Honest
Oh Rebecca has a way of writing funny self portrayals with just enough reveal how quickly one can begin drinking again. She writes with a voice of a positive best friend. I find such comforting.
The author acknowledges how prevalent alcohol is intertwined within society and celebratory events. She also offers very practical workarounds. I wish she would do speaking engagements in the USA. I would be thrilled to meet this truly talented author in person.

Good story, less than relatable
I find a good story to be one where at least some aspect of the story resonates with me - I found this partly as she recounted the struggles and consequences she dealt with leading to her decision to quit drinking, but found a lot of the dialogue to be hokey and cringey. Although I’m happy everything seemed to work out well for her as soon as she quit drinking, her epiphanies and perfect plans for how she found almost immediate success and returns in her business within a year of quitting her job seemed unrealistic. This may be an uplifting read for someone who doesn’t find a good wholesome story full of sparkles, warm hugs and smiles to be nauseating and over-the-top. I was glad it wasn’t a long read.

Okay
This wasn’t my favourite quit lit book, but I appreciated her story.
I found her voice and style of audio narration excruciating to listen to, however. It was very hard to make it through this audiobook, and I imagine my experience of the book would’ve been different had she employed someone else to record it.

When you know, you know - trust the process.
You found this book for a reason and when the universe hands you a card..... follow it through.
If you too have found yourself wanting to say goodbye to the misery of the wine bitch and are fortunate enough to be wanting to implement a change, l recommend taking a walk and give this book a listen, perhaps for the comfort in knowing you are not the only one dealing with the bitch.
Good luck to you in gaining momentum, remember the drive and the conniving deceitful intelligence your addiction needs to get that next drink? Redirect that drive and channel it to your recovery, it's hard and it will suck, but you deserve more than the wine bitch throws your way.
I'm 42 and 5 months sober. Listening to this was like reading pages out of my own book of life. It's so refreshing to wake up next to my significant other fresh as a daisy in clean fresh sheets, knowing what I did, what I said, where I am, where my bag is, where my phone is, not creating drama, and... having NO REGRETS.
Addiction comes in so many forms and can manifest from many difficult scenarios. Please know that you are an intelligent person. Whilst we cannot change experiences of our past or the reminders of weakness that may sneak up on us, we deserve to wake up peaceful, content and grateful to the prospect of positive new sober experiences.
When you know, you know.
