Publisher's summary

From the New York Times best-selling author Darynda Jones comes the second novel in her laugh-out-loud Sunshine Vicram mystery series, A Good Day for Chardonnay.

Running a small-town police force in the mountains of New Mexico should be a smooth, carefree kind of job. Sadly, full-time Sheriff - and even fuller-time coffee guzzler - Sunshine Vicram didn't get that memo.

All Sunshine really wants is one easygoing day. You know, the kind that starts with coffee and a donut (or three) and ends with takeout pizza and a glass of chardonnay (or seven). Turns out, that’s about as easy as switching to decaf. (What kind of people do that? And who hurt them?)

Before she can say iced mocha latte, Sunny's got a bar fight gone bad, a teenage daughter hunting a serial killer and, oh yes, the still unresolved mystery of her own abduction years prior. All evidence points to a local distiller, a dangerous bad boy named Levi Ravinder, but Sun knows he's not the villain of her story. Still, perhaps beneath it all, he possesses the keys to her disappearance. At the very least, beneath it all, he possesses a serious set of abs. She's seen it. Once. Accidentally.

Between policing a town her hunky chief deputy calls four cents short of a nickel, that pesky crush she has on Levi that seems to grow exponentially every day, and an irascible raccoon that just doesn't know when to quit, Sunny's life is about to rocket to a whole new level of crazy.

Yep, definitely a good day for chardonnay.

Loved!

A bar fight gone bad. A hunt for a killer. A pesky crush that Sunshinep just can't shake. A sneaky raccoon and tenacious teens. Dangerous Daughters. Darynda Jones has a way of luring you in and making you never want to leave. I can't wait to see what comes next

Pornography is offensive!

I loved it, UNTIL a very graphic, descriptive sex scene was introduced towards the end of the book. I look for books to enjoy. I don't want to be given a visual of someone else's sexual encounters! I won't be ordering from this author again.

Wow, this was bad

The first book in this series was light and entertaining, but the characters seemed to have lost their brains between the first and second books. Every man can't be this perfect and every woman can't be this weak-kneed. The main character is a sheriff and seems to be falling apart every time a chiseled man comes in the room. And her 15-year old daughter is the same.

Awesome

I love Darynda Jones books. I have all her first series in hard cover. This one has captured all the hilarity and joy of the first. Thx.

Feel let down

Loved the book but feel empty by the ending. Ribbed from the very thing I was waiting for Levi’s reaction. Two books many months and I’m let down

Straight from the Darynda Jones playbook

If you listened to book 1, or her Charlie Davidson series, then you know what you’ll get out of this book 2:
📍Fun police booking (or in C Davidson, coffee mug) quips starting chapters
📍Strong female lead connected to law enforcement with a penchant for Buffy-esque quotes
📍Sexy, mysterious bad boy who shares a childhood past with the gal
📍Relatives of lead gal that keep secrets from lead gal
📍Bonds of family, friendship, and humor
📍Amazing narrator Lorelei King

That’s not a bad thing, however. The author’s playbook is now familiar, dependable and comforting… like snuggling under a blanket with a good book on a lazy afternoon. I’m really getting attached to supporting characters like bacon loving Quincy or Sunshine’s possibly felonious dad. I also like the weird way her small town police force recruits new members.

Although the main mystery is a stand alone police procedural, this book continues a few mini-mysteries about the town’s, and Sunshine’s past, from book 1. And, while there are small recaps, I recommend listening to book 1 to properly grasp the intertwined relationships and story arcs that progress and evolve in this book.

Like book 1, there’s still mild trigger warnings for rape and child kidnapping/abuse (indirectly referenced), a smattering of F bombs, and one explicit sex scene plus a wet dream. The book also relies a bit too heavily on people around Sunshine keeping secrets for not very sensible reasons… but it’s all in service to the Darynda Jones formula for a solid listen.
