SARA

I’ve made a huge mistake!

When the handsome and charming alien offers to steal me away from my abusive owner, I jump at the chance for a better life. But appearances are deceiving, and now I find myself owned by a cold-blooded killer.

Kean’s sinful growls and possessive words make me crave things I know I shouldn’t. But I can’t fall for the ruthless murderer who ends lives with a smile on his face. It’s wrong! I need to get away before it’s too late.

KEAN

Sarah is mine!

I’ve done many horrible things in my life to get to where I am now. And I will do many more to protect what is mine. And Sarah is MINE! She’s terrified of me, but I know she wants me. I scent her arousal.

I didn’t expect her to run. But there’s nowhere for her to hide; I own all of Vosthea. And when I find her, I’m going to claim her as my mate!

This sci-fi alien romance is filled with action, adventure, and steamy scenes. HEA guaranteed! This story is a complete romance and can be listened to as a standalone or as part of a series.

This installment hits a sweet spot for the series: short, well-paced, and emotionally direct. Troy Duran narrates with confidence and keeps the story engaging throughout.

The heroine’s situation—thrust from danger into an unexpected refuge—sets up a classic captive-to-protector arc that works really well here. The hero is steady and focused, and their gradual trust-building feels earned without dragging. There’s enough action to keep things lively, and enough tender moments to satisfy the romance.

The world-building fits neatly with the rest of the series, adding a few new details without slowing the plot. A good pick if you’re in the mood for a short, warm, and steamy sci-fi romance.

Character Backgrounds and Plot Summary

Sara is a human woman who has spent far too long under the control of an abusive owner. When the powerful alien Kean offers her a chance to escape, she believes she is finally finding freedom. Instead, she discovers that her rescuer is a feared crime lord and warrior who rules the planet Vosthea with ruthless efficiency. Kean may have saved her from one master, but Sara struggles with the fear that she has simply traded one captor for another.

Kean is not written as a traditional romantic hero. He is possessive, violent, and unapologetically dangerous. He kills enemies without hesitation and maintains control through strength and fear. Yet from the moment he sees Sara’s courage in the face of abuse, he becomes determined to protect her. The central conflict comes from Sara trying to reconcile the brutal warlord she sees with the fiercely protective mate Kean believes himself to be.

The story follows Sara’s adjustment to life in Kean’s compound while she searches for clues about her missing sister, Chrissy. Her desire to find her sister repeatedly puts her at odds with Kean, especially when misunderstandings lead him to believe she is trying to leave him. Their relationship develops against a backdrop of political conflict, criminal rivalries, and Kean’s efforts to secure his control over Vosthea.

Highlights and Limitations

One of the book’s strongest elements is Kean himself. Lynnea Lee leans fully into the morally gray hero concept rather than trying to soften him. Kean remains dangerous throughout the story, but his actions consistently reveal his devotion to Sara. A particularly effective example is how he provides her with safety, food, and comfort after rescuing her, despite her fear of him. His protectiveness feels genuine because it is demonstrated through actions rather than declarations alone.

Sara is also more proactive than many heroines in captivity romances. Her determination to find Chrissy drives much of the plot and prevents her from becoming a passive character. The search for her sister adds emotional weight beyond the romance and creates believable conflict between the leads.

The worldbuilding is another strength. The political instability on Vosthea and Kean’s position as a planetary ruler give the story a larger scope than a simple captive romance. The action scenes and power struggles help maintain momentum between romantic developments.

The biggest limitation is that some readers may struggle with Kean’s possessiveness. His “Sara is mine” mindset is not subtle, and several conflicts could have been resolved more quickly through communication. The romance relies heavily on the fated mate and possessive protector dynamic, so listeners who dislike dominant heroes may find the relationship difficult to embrace.

Narration

Troy Duran is an excellent choice for Kean. His deep, commanding voice captures the character’s intimidating presence and confidence. When Kean delivers possessive lines or issues threats, Duran makes them sound completely believable.

He also does a good job differentiating characters during dialogue-heavy scenes. Kean’s authority, Sara’s uncertainty, and the supporting cast each feel distinct enough that conversations are easy to follow. Most importantly, Duran understands the tone of the story. He balances the danger, action, and romance without overplaying any one element.

Because the audiobook is told by a single narrator, some listeners who prefer duet or dual narration in romance may miss having a separate voice for Sara. Even so, Duran’s performance is strong enough that the audiobook remains engaging throughout.

Final Opinion

A Captive for Kean delivers exactly what its premise promises: a possessive alien warlord, a frightened but determined heroine, plenty of action, and a romance built on protection, trust, and emotional growth. Kean is one of the darker heroes in the Tallean Mercenaries series, but his devotion to Sara keeps him compelling rather than simply cruel.

The search for Chrissy adds meaningful stakes, while the political conflict on Vosthea prevents the story from becoming repetitive. Combined with Troy Duran’s commanding narration, the result is an entertaining sci-fi romance that balances danger, adventure, and steam.

If you enjoy morally gray alien heroes, protective mate bonds, and captivity romances where the hero must earn the heroine’s trust, this audiobook is well worth the listen.

This is the story of the “drug lord” Kean who is viewed by most as a villain and his mate, Sara. It opens with him rescuing Sara from her owner, and taking over the rest of the planet. It shows how and why he became a “villain”, and you root for them as a couple. It has a good flow, and the push pull between the two is perfect. Both have trust issues they have to work through. There’s some action and a little spice, but mostly, it’s a slow burn because they have so much to work through. She has a lot of healing to do. Troy Duran is a great choice to narrate this series. He has the perfect growly voice for these scenes.
