When the once-mighty city of Rome was sacked by barbarians in 410 and lay in ruins, it signaled the end of an era—and the beginning of a thousand years of profound transformation. In a gripping narrative bursting with big names—from St Augustine and Attila the Hun to the Prophet Muhammad and Eleanor of Aquitaine—Dan Jones charges through the history of the Middle Ages. Powers and Thrones takes listeners on a journey through an emerging Europe, the great capitals of late Antiquity, as well as the influential cities of the Islamic West.

The Habsburg family ruled central Europe since the early medieval times to World War I, but they still exist as one of the most prestigious Austrian families. To keep themselves in such high positions, the Habsburgs had to develop unique strategies to fight their political enemies. They wanted to rule the world and saw themselves as the only dynasty worthy of such divine right. To keep the family pure, they often married within their family, which resulted in a very weak genetic pool and many mental and physical problems.

Israel is a tiny state, and yet it has captured the world's attention, aroused its imagination, and, lately, been the object of its opprobrium. Why does such a small country speak to so many global concerns? More pressingly: Why does Israel make the decisions it does? And what lies in its future? We cannot answer these questions until we understand Israel's people and the questions and conflicts, the hopes and desires, that have animated their conversations and actions.

The Roman Empire has been in the spotlight for ages. It has been studied, research, and taught in schools across the world. Inventions, words, vocabulary, and philosophy have been derived from those important transition in human history. The Romans were ruthless in some ways yet civilized in others. They were a peculiar people who did things differently than those they called barbarians. Their warfare, their habits, their vision of the future...these all made their empire what it became. What is that makes us so obsessed with this particular time period?

Historia
Civilization was born 8,000 years ago, between the floodplains of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, when migrants from the surrounding mountains and deserts began to create increasingly sophisticated urban societies. In the cities that they built, half of human history took place. In Babylon, Paul Kriwaczek tells the story of Mesopotamia from the earliest settlements seven thousand years ago to the eclipse of Babylon in the sixth century BCE. Bringing the people of this land to life in vibrant detail, the author chronicles the rise and fall of power during this period.

In the dramatic narratives that comprise The Republic of Nature, Mark Fiege reframes the canonical account of American history based on the simple but radical premise that nothing in the nation's past can be considered apart from the natural circumstances in which it occurred. Revisiting historical icons so familiar that schoolchildren learn to take them for granted, he makes surprising connections that enable readers to see old stories in a new light.

A Brief and Disturbing History of Portugal
What an interesting book on the history of Portugal. The early history discusses more of the Mediterranean area and the development and expansion of the Roman Empire, which led to the Romans conquering the Iberian Peninsula. Then I thought it got interesting when it discusses Afonso I, King of Portugal 1109-1185, the first King of Portugal who declared independence, and the rise of the Kings of Portugal, along with the Golden Era of Portugal. Although I have to admit, the infighting and poor management of the government by the Kings was disheartening, but the expansion and exploration by Portugal was intriguing. Later, the fall and decline of the government leading to the eventual dictatorship by Dr. Antonio Salazar. I found him to be very interesting as he was trained by Jesuits, adopted two daughters, was religious, and appeared to have no greed. Yet, his rule was strong-handed, and did not show much compassion for his people. Finally, it is good to see that Portugal has entered the current age and is on a good path, finally seeking the best for its people. I find their culture to be very interesting and encouraging in today’s age and hope I can visit there someday. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Portugal.

Lots of interesting information, great listen!
After having visited Portugal for the first time last year, I realized I definitely want to learn more about the history of Portugal. What I like about this listen is how much ground it covers. I listened once, but will go back piece by piece at my computer so I can look up additional info, maps. etc. as I listen again. So, in that sense, this audiobook serves as a massive outline for an entire course of study on the history of Portugal. For that reason, I think this is a great jumping off point to learn A LOT about the history of Portugal.

Well constructed
This book packed a wealth of information within its pages, and covered an expansive array of Portugal's history. I love listening to historical facts about nations, as there is so much to be discovered about the world and its people. I must admit that I didn't really know that Portugal had a rich history, especially its wars and rulers.
This was enjoyable, and worth a relisten.

Engaging and Informative!
The narrator was excellent, the chapters were well-structured, and the subject matter was comprehensive, covering prehistoric Portugal, the Roman Empire, and the institution of Roman Peace (5500 BC to 200 AD), all the way up to Modern-Day Portugal (1975 to 2022 AD). It is an excellent audiobook that provides an engaging and informative look into the history of Portugal. I found it to be both educational and enjoyable, and I'm sure others will too!
