Publisher's Summary

In this gripping second novella in the Widow’s Island series, bestselling author Melinda Leigh delivers a chilling tale of murder in the Pacific Northwest.

Deputy Tessa Black gave up her career as a detective with the Seattle PD and returned to the Pacific Northwest island she calls home to care for her ailing mother. Tessa thinks her mother’s illness is the worst thing she’ll face - until she responds to a routine call in the state park and discovers a local man harpooned to a sign.

As the murder investigation unfolds, it becomes clear that the victim harbored secrets. Together with her FBI agent best friend, Cate, and park ranger Logan Wilde, Tessa must connect the pieces before the murderer strikes again. But the closer she gets to the truth, the more she finds herself - and the ones she loves - in harm’s way.

Pressure mounts as Tessa attempts to juggle the current case with her search for the truth behind her childhood friend Samantha’s disappearance twenty years ago. Can Tessa find the murderer and uncover answers about Samantha without jeopardizing everything she holds dear?

Much better than Close to the Bone

Christine Williams' narration is also much better. A BONE TO PICK is a first rate novella. It is not that Melinda Leigh is a more talented author than Kendra Elliot (she is not; they are equally talented). The Widow's Island novella series has potential to be as successful as the other novella series Elliot and Leigh have coauthored.

Meh

Leaves much too much under done. The plot races to a conclusion on rather weak development.

Narrator needs acting lessons. She has virtually no inflection or variation.....
Simple seems to be reading a text.

OK book, horrible narration..

I said I wasn't going to listen to this because the narrator was soooooo awful but since it was a
free read, free listen I decided to give her another chance to see if she got better. She didn’t. So, I quit listening and just read the novella.

This was a story about the murder of an artist who had been harpooned AND Tessa’s problem trying to take care of her mother who has dementia and who finally wandered off into the woods.

Since it was only 101 pages I can't say much without giving it away so, enough said.

There was a thought or two of romance but that was all and the F-bomb was thrown out there 5 times.

As to the narration: Horrible! Jeez, everything Christine Williams read was so romantic sounding. If she was talking about a dead body she made it sound romantic. That was the only emotion she had. AND every time the book said it was Logan talking I thought WTH, I thought that was Tessa or Cait. Every man sounded just like a girl. I quit listening after about 15 minutes, just about the time Logan spoke for the first time. NOTHING worse than a girly-sounding man. The other few reviews must be friends or relatives of the author or the narrator, to have given her 4 and 5 star reviews.

A Bone To Pick

We are back on Widow's Island and this time we get to know Tessa Black better. She has returned to the island from Seattle PD to help take care of her mother who is suffering from dementia and help raise her younger sister. She is called out when an islander hears screaming late at night and calls on Logan who has also returned after his stint in the military and suffering from PTSD and now working for the Forest Service. What they find is a local artist who has been harpooned. This one was fast moving and full of twists and turns to find the killer of the artist. We also get to know more about Tessa and Cate and their missing friend, Samantha. Really enjoying this series.

Narration hasn't improved

This took me way too long to finish. I had the worst time getting through it. The narrator emphasizes the weirdest words and the way she asks a question makes me want to rip my hair out. If it was ONE character asking questions this way, I would take it as a character quirk. Unfortunately, it was EVERY question in the book...amd there are a LOT of questions being asked since it is a mystery novella. The story was ok. The first one was better. I'll probably never find out who killed Samantha because I just can't listen to this narrator.

Nice Little Story!

This is the 2nd book in Series and is told from Tess’s perspective. There is still no conclusion with Samantha but I am sure when the series is done.

By the Light of the Moon on a Sharp Harpoon

Deputy Tessa Black is called in the middle of the night to a state park after someone says they heard screams. She finds an abandoned car, and soon finds a man stuck to a sign, hanging by a harpoon. Tessa calls in Park Ranger Logan Wilde (former Army Special Forces) and Henry, Widow’s Island doctor and coroner. The dead man is Dante, a local artist who moved to Widow’s Island about a year ago. Good looking and well liked, as far as they knew. But after a little digging, and a closer inspection of Dante’s driver’s license, Tessa learned that Dante had some secrets. Then when Tessa went to the barn where Dante was renting space as a studio and living quarters, she was attacked . . . with her attacker escaping on a four-wheeler into the forest. The artist’s canvases revealed a LOT more to Tessa and Logan when they re-entered Dante’s studio . . . Great murder mystery, as well as the story of the folks on Widow’s Island that I’ve come to love . . .

not my favorite series of hers

I love Melinda Leigh but have to admit this isn't my favorite series. if you aren't familiar with her I'd highly recommend starting with a different series. if you are a ML fan these are just ok.
