Publisher's Summary

The air is unbearably tense as Armand Gamache returns to the Sûreté du Québec for his first day of work since his demotion from its command to head of homicide.

Amid blistering personal social media attacks, Gamache sets out on his first assignment - to find a missing woman. But as he leads the search for Vivienne Godin, Three Pines itself is threatened when the river breaks its banks, and a province-wide emergency is declared.

As the waters rise, a body is discovered - and the victim's distraught father contemplates a murder of his own.

As a father himself, Gamache is haunted by a question...what would he do, if his child's killer might walk free?

Outstanding

Another fabulous book from LOUISE PENNY.
The story kept me hooked and thinking and plotting to the end. I am sad I will have to wait a while to re enter the world of three pines.
I enjoy all the characters so very much.
Best yet.

Louise Penny at her best as always.

In my mind , Three Pines actually exists as do the characters that inhabit the village. I would love to meet Chief Inspector, Gamache, his family and friends. The personalities are real. The storylines amazing. I could go on .......and Robert Bathurst as narrator brings the whole thing alive. Will there be another in this series? I hope so.

Brilliant!

To read about Three Pines is like coming home...Penny manages to bring out new sides to the characters we think we know so well.

First audiobook - favourite series

This was my very first audiobook experience- just joined audible, so I was excited to see this very newly released book in the Inspector Gamash series set in and around the small Québéc village of Three Pines. While I still loved the book, and found the medium of an audiobook excellent for this story, it wasn’t one of the best in the series. It’s well written and the characters are engaging, but I think it’s hard to sustain such a long series. It breaks my heart to say that, as I really enjoy this delightful and thoughtful series- and eagerly await each new release. But I think there must be an end point, before they sort of drift to an end. Well worth a read, and while you could read this as a stand alone- you should go back to the beginning to discover the joy of Three Pines and the characters who live there. Perhaps Louise Penny, a lovely writer can discover a new story line - and a new series for her avid and devoted fans.

Fantastic

The stories just get better with each book. Finishing each book and leaving Three Pines is like saying goodbye to best friends.

OUTSTANDING STORY AND PERFORMANCE!

"A Better Man" ticked all the right boxes for me. I love all of Louise Penny's books but this one has become my current favourite! The story was complex with a number of different suspects but also the journey of Inspector Gamesh with the Surete is as riveting as the main plot. Amazing twists and well developed plot as well was some surprises at the end, great to see the familiar characters showing up again! Can't wait for the next one at Three Pines.

A better man

Terrific story and narration, I’ve found it difficult to get into these books up until this one. I really loved it. Makes me want to go to Quebec.
Great characters too. A bloody good read.
