The 20th mystery in the #1 New York Times-bestselling Armand Gamache series.

Somewhere out there, in the darkness, a black wolf is feeding.

Several weeks ago, Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Québec and his team uncovered and stopped a domestic terrorist attack in Montréal, arresting the person behind it. A man they called the Black Wolf.

But their relief is short-lived. In a sickening turn of events, Gamache has realized that plot, as horrific as it was, was just the beginning. Perhaps even a deliberate misdirection. One he fell into. Something deeper and darker, more damaging, is planned. Did he in fact arrest the Black Wolf, or are they still out there? Armand is appalled to think his mistake has allowed their conspiracy to grow, to gather supporters. To spread lies, manufacture enemies, and feed hatred and division.

Still recovering from wounds received in stopping the first attack, Armand is confined to the village of Three Pines, leading a covert investigation from there. He must be careful not to let the Black Wolf know he has recognized his mistake. In a quiet church basement, he and his senior agents Beauvoir and Lacoste, pore over what little evidence they have. Two notebooks. A few mysterious numbers on a tattered map of Québec. And a phrase repeated by the person they had called the Grey Wolf. A warning…

In a dry and parched land where there is no water.

Gamache and his small team of supporters realize that for the Black Wolf to have gotten this far, they must have powerful allies, in law enforcement, in industry, in organized crime, in the halls of government.

From the apparent peace of his little village, Gamache finds himself playing a lethal game of cat and mouse with an invisible foe who is gathering forces and preparing to strike.

"Brassard's accents—whether French Canadian, Italian, or continental French—create indelible characters. His performance lets us feel Reine Marie's warmth and Armand's affectionate nature, and he adds an additional layer to surly Ruth and her potty-mouthed duck. Exciting and entertaining." —AudioFile on The Grey Wolf (Earphones Award winner)

I understand the desire to change the reader to a Quebec native. The previous two readers were able to pull in and hold the listener. This reader has not quite captured the listener. But willing to continue giving a chance.

Very good; prefer previous reader

This could be ripped from today's news. Good job, Louise! It's very scary to contemplate.

TOO REAL

excellent story, suspenseful, complex, believable. It was difficult to follow newly introduced characters as many of their names were narrated incoherently to my untrained ear. looking forward to Penny‘s next creation.

chilling

Brassard ... narrator. How I wish I spoke French. Then, I might have had to use less energy to follow who was who bc of his (I assume) excellent French punctuation of all the names. I understand the desire for a more authentic "voice"; however, it was at times too authentic for an Anglo ear. Love Perry and I'll re-read this book as I do all her writings. It will be easier to follow then.

Who did you say?

really not sure why its only at one star already... just as well written and engaging as the rest of this series! <3

Another beautiful gamache

I’ve always loved these books but I have to say with all the news and social media nonstop I was very disappointed that I was listening to more in the story. This is my time to dive into your stories and relax. I won’t continue to listen if this is where the story goes.

Way to political

Way too political and simplistic. I read for pleasure. If I want to be educated, I read WSJ and scientific journals. Clearly Louise hasn’t sought to be well informed or open minded to every aspect of issues. Very disappointing. Read Michael Connelly’s newest. It is much better.

Left Lunatic Political Propaganda

I loved Louise Penny’s books in the beginning, but this ongoing and ever escalating demonisation of the United States in this novel was repugnant. Penny has always used her platform to preach to us about inclusivity and rainbows and butterflies and how misguided and dangerous Republicans and conservatives are. However, this book goes further than simply being a diatribe about the dangers of Donald Trump. It speaks about the United States wanting to invade Canada and how dangerous we are or would be in a water shortage or drought situation. I can understand creating a fictitious scenario through which you ratchet up tension, but this is not what Louise Penny has done. It is a blatant, and frankly ridiculous, scenario were somebody who fits the description of Hillary Clinton is now president and the United States has a plan to invade Canada should Water become a major issue. And of course Water is going to become a major issue. Honestly, somebody needs to sit down and pull her back to reality because this mystery that she’s created is not even for her readers. I doubt even Canadian readers are enjoying it. Save your money and put it towards a reader who doesn’t demonise the United States and make us out to be fools and cutthroats.
