At 18, Paul Berge, author of Muzzy and Aeromancy, volunteered for the Army during the Vietnam War to avoid college. As with all veterans, he had to survive Basic Training (aka Boot Camp), which was intimidating and painful but ultimately damn silly. On the positive side, they let him shoot up stuff with machine guns, which is way better than college. A-5-2 takes the listener from civilian to soldier via institutional absurdity unimaginable outside the Twilight Zone but routine inside the military. Very funny recollection

I joined the Army about 10 years after this author but a lot of it rings true to the 80s as well. Very entertaining and for those that were in - you get it. Those that weren’t he does a great job describing things instead of assuming you know them, like rank structure.
