Publisher's Summary

The first in an intelligent, multi-layered crime series featuring DI Eva Harris.

A vicious killer on the loose, a traitor on the team - and a past that’s catching up with her.

Can DI Harris see the truth before it’s too late?

An expert killer who takes his victims’ eyes - can DI Harris see clearly enough to uncover the truth?

On the first day of her new job, Harris is called to the scene of a brutal murder at the heart of Surrey society. A shocking crime, with a meticulous killer: the victim’s eyes have been removed and the body drained of blood, with no forensic evidence left at the scene.

Her boss insists it must be the return of a killer who escaped justice several years ago, leaving a trail of bloody ritualistic killings. Harris isn’t so sure: both sets of victims have had their eyes removed, but other details are significantly different.

But Harris’s desperate desire to uncover the truth is complicated by her secret mission to find corruption at the heart of the police. Who can she trust in her own team? Harris is also hiding a secret past of her own - can she find the killer and learn who to depend on, before her dark history catches up with her?

Phenomenal

The book starts of on fire, setting the tone and pace for the rest of the book. It is beautifully descriptive throughout the whole book. The occasional view from the victims was perfectly woven into the stories and gave the the following scenes a dark twist I enjoyed.
I would consider myself an amateur sleuth (didn’t read all those Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books for nothing) and while I was able to develop some theories the different elements of this story both the backstory and current being woven together laid a web that was extremely compelling and very hard to unravel with any certainty I was following the right thread.
I would love to see this picked up by the BBC, a perfect mix of Luther and Endeavor vibes but with a female lead. I look forward to a sequel, I am not done reading DI Eva Harris yet.

Warning solid story but - language and gore

Overall, I would have given this book a 5 but there was really an over abundance of language and graphic horror.
Nonetheless, I found this to be an excellent story, especially so since I would have quit on it early otherwise. The layering of corruption was realistic but our protagonist’s resolution would probably, in actuality, not work. That is the reason for only a four star on the story.

monotone

I had a hard time getting caught up in this book because the narrator was so monotone. Made me want to re-record it for them.

Brilliant, Deep and Riveting

Carl Goodman is a major talent. This book was quite well written, layered with complex themes, and at the same time “unputdownable.” There is some graphic sex and violence (not my usual cup of tea) but it is neither gratuitous nor repetitive.
I listened to 20/20 as part of Audible Plus—would not hesitate to use one of my credits for future books in the series.

actually this book was not good

I really wanted to like this book. I struggled so much trying to get through it. I had to rewind it numerous times. so much going on so many names. so many different places skipping back and forth in the timeline. It was just too much. apparently I left it going all night and the story ended and I've probably repeated the middle section five times now trying to finish it. I'm just going to give up. I can't do it

Messy with usual violence and sex

not sure why this got any good reviews. the performance was good but the story keeps introducing new characters multiple threads and nothing comes together. plus the heroine is a super model with super hero strength, and there are frequent very detailed sex scenes that don't bring and value whatsoever to the story. seems the author thinks detailed sex scenes are de rigueur for a thriller.

CARL GOODMAN'S book 20/20. Couldn't stop listening

20/20 is the 1st book I have ever listened to by Carl Goodman. I would love to write one of those reviews that I look for. The one that describes the book without any spoilers. A review that gets you so interested that you have no choice but to read or listen to the book. YESTERDAY!!! But I'm tired. I've been stealing away every spare moment I had to listen to this book. It is that good. I haven't enjoyed a new author like that in years. Will definitely be one I listen to again. With pleasure

Unexpected thriller...corruption spans oceans.

I liked the narrator and the story was unexpectedly entertaining. There were times where I was frustrated with Eva but as the story evolved I appreciated how she gained the confidence and respect from her team.

Too much swearing

good story but there is far too much swearing for my liking and that's why I returned it. The narrator seems to have only one tone of voice doesn't fluctuate to match the scene or the moods of the characters but minus this would of been a really good listen

Dreadful narration good story

Only the story kept me listening to this book. This is some of the worst narration I’ve ever heard on audible. I’ve heard better reading out loud from teenage school kids. And this is definitely reading out loud rather than narration. I don’t care if she was in lockdown, I would have thought reading from home would be more comfortable.
The story though was exciting and intriguing though I did guess the villains fairy early on. It was quite satisfying to be proved right.
You can tell it’s written by a man though. There’s a few sex scenes, which while not graphic or explicit are still gratuitous and the women’s sexual motivations are questionable.

Took a punt on this book and won

I had not heard of author and the style was not one I would normally choose. However it was complex and kept me listening to the point I sat in my car after journeys end. I loved the fierce main character and the story within a story concept. Gosh, loved it.

Very good story - awful narration!

I really enjoyed the story and if it hadn’t of been so good I don’t think I could have put up with the narration.
The narrator bizarrely reads the book in a very slow staccato fashion. I would recommend increasing the reading speed to 1.2x normal as I found this ‘speeded’ her up enough to persevere.
The story is very good though, good twists and turns and main character engaging.

Good story line, reduced by awkward narration and the miss use of psychological terminology

On the plus side, the story line kept me engaged. Unfortunately, at times it was hard to tell who was saying what as the narrator’s voice didn’t really vary enough between characters (I may have been spoiled by other seriously great narrators on Audible), but most disappointing was that the author lacked an understanding of some of the psychological terminology he used. If it had been once or twice it would have been easier to ignore. Mixing up psychosis with personality disorder became pretty irritating.

Good story

I enjoyed the story, but still found this a challenging book to get through only because of the narration which was really odd. It was almost robotic at times. Slow with no feel or flow. I had to speed it up to get through which made me think that maybe it was recorded at the wrong speed.

Powerful and complex

A very action packed story from a very clever author. A bit over my head in quite a few places when technology was explained but it fits the book. The reader was a little monotonous and used full English diction such as can not rather than can’t but I don’t think she was meant to be acting, rather telling the story.
Plenty of blood, murder and sex. Overall an enjoyable story, that I should read again to understand better.

One of the better books I have listened to recently. Although the storyline and characters are not particularly believable it is engaging. The narrator does stumble a couple of times and sentences didn't always flow as I thought they should. This did not however spoil the story.
