Well if that wasnt a clusterf**k...

I thuroughly enjoyed the previous books, but this one was different. It felt as though the characters had bipolar disorder since they kept changing their moods, and they only seemed to have 3 different moods: neutral, melancholy/sad and furious.

The timeframes were completely impossible to figure out. First something is described as though years pass by, but then it seems as though it only have taken days, and during this time the characters have not aged but gotten years of experience.

Then there is the characters themselves... sometimes brilliant and sometimes borderline imbiciles. Sometimes things are just known by everyone without there being a description of how this knowledge was shared.

This basicly felt as though it was a mind map over the basic overlook of the book. The main story was there, but the details surrounding it was nowhere to be seen.

Great voice, bad plot connections

This book has several positives. One, the reading is really engaging. Two, the writing is well done. So why did I give this only two stars....the book lacks, heavily, motivations and any sort of character consistency. Nil is so full of contradictions that he goes from genius, overpowered, arch mage in one minute, and under-powered fool in the next.....and there are two or three paragraphs telling you why that's true.....and it happens all the time. That's not good....once at a couple plot points would work....not every new scene. Then....he decides to go off and meet the "king" you just killed a bunch of innocence people because he felt slighted because of power, nobility, etc....killing villagers...children.....and yeah.....lets go walk up and talk....who cares about defense, caring for the injured. Is the main character a caring person or someone who is just so self absorbed that we doesn't care about anyone. The whole book felt like the top level plot was worked out and he just needed to connect the events and didn't care about the characters. i.e. I need the character to get to point A...yeah, ok, stupid reason C....wait, that should take 6 months...now, wait...back to point Z, stupid reason D then C...and..hmmm...1 month.

It is frustrating, because the small segment writing is well done...but I just kept finding myself going...."what?"...wait..."why?"....

I think if the author listened to this book he would immediately see where the book goes off the rails.....maybe he should do a series 2.

I suggest buying the actual book, read the last couple chapters...its shorter, less frustrating, and cheaper.

All Over the Place

Excellent narration by Derek Perkins as usual. The book, however, was awful. I couldn't even get through it. I re-listened to the first 2 books because it had been awhile. I noticed that the 2nd book was somewhat disorganized and stilted and hoped the writer would correct that in the 3rd book, but it's even worse. Nil is there, nil is not there. We're in the present, then we're in the future. I kept rewinding it to try to make more sense of it, but that didn't help.
