சர் ஆர்தர் கோனான் டாயில் திறமையானதொரு கதைசொல்லி. 1881ஆம் ஆண்டு மருத்துவப் பட்டம் பெற்ற இவர், தனது படிப்பு முடிந்த அடுத்த ஆண்டிலேயே “A Study in Scarlet" என்ற முதல் துப்பறியும் நாவலை எழுதினார். இதில்தான், “ஷெர்லாக் ஹோம்ஸ்” என்ற பாத்திரத்தையும், அவருடைய உதவியாராக “வாட்சன்” என்ற பாத்திரத்தையும் இவர் அறிமுகம் செய்தார்.
