An undoubtedly interesting, exciting, and dramatic chapter of Russian history was when it was ruled over by the Romanov dynasty. This powerful ruling family came to power shortly after the frightening rule of a legendary figure in Russian history: Ivan the Terrible. After murdering his own son and unborn grandson, Ivan died without an heir, resulting in the formation of a new dynasty. This was the Romanov family.

The murder of the Romanov family in July 1918 horrified the world, and its aftershocks still reverberate today. In Putin's autocratic Russia, the Revolution itself is considered a crime, and its anniversary was largely ignored. In stark contrast, the centenary of the massacre of the imperial family will be commemorated in 2018 by a huge ceremony to be attended by the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church. While the murder itself has received major attention, what has never been investigated in detail are the various plots behind the scenes to save the family.

Sofia Ivanovna Tyutcheva (1870-1957) was appointed to the service of Nicholas II's daughters in 1907 and served as a companion to them until her resignation in 1912. In 1945, she recorded her memoirs of her time spent with the last Russian Imperial Family, among other things recounting the trip to England to visit the English Royal Family and a visit to the Empress's brother in Hesse. Tyutcheva records her impressions of all the immediate members of the Tsar's family with interesting details about their life not found in other sources.

In 2017, a film entitled “Matilda”, produced by Alexei Uchitel, created a stir in Russian mass media. The script was based on romance between the Heir to the Russian throne, future Tsar Nicholas II, and a young ballet dancer named Mathilde Kschessinska.
