De avonturenroman over de rijke Phileas Fogg die wedt dat hij in 80 dagen om de wereld kan reizen werd gepubliceerd in 1873. Het verhaal en afgeleiden ervan werden talloze keren verfilmd. Zoals alle boeken van Verne speelt ook in De reis om de wereld in 80 dagen de nieuwe technologie van de negentiende eeuw een grote rol.

In 1962 verscheen bij Meulenhoff Kort Amerikaans, de inmiddels klassiek geworden debuutroman van Jan Wolkers over een jongen die in de Tweede Wereldoorlog onderduikt om aan de Arbeitseinsatz te ontkomen. Zonder dat de dreiging van de oorlog ook maar even verdwijnt, vecht de jongen in zijn schuilplaats tegen zijn angsten en zijn erotische obsessies. In 1979 herschreef Jan Wolkers het boek naar aanleiding van de verfilming die datzelfde jaar uitkwam. In 2006 werd het boek door Dick Matena in omgewerkt tot strip in drie delen.
