Being confronted by situations that create this dissonance or highlight these inconsistencies motivates change in their cognitions or actions to reduce this dissonance, maybe by changing a belief, by explaining something away, or by taking actions that reduce perceived inconsistency.”"While not exactly a ‘defense mechanism’ itself, a person adopts a defensive mechanism/mechanisms to deal with the discomfort of the dissonance." The right is not uncomfortable with this hypocrisy. The right is uncomfortable when their fundamentally different beliefs conflict with reality, because to them, reality is wrong, not their beliefs.
