  • Super Jo and the Devil
    May 2 2025

This week, we were joined by a previous guest and friend of the show, Jo Findlayson.

Jo joined the podcast waaaaaay back in Season 1, Episode 7, but a lot has happened since then.

Jo started working with me at the turn of the year and has been putting in the work, in both training and races, with a big test coming in the recent Devil o' the Highlands Footrace.

Instead of doing a 'normal' debrief, we thought, why not share it, so here we are.

    We talk about:

    1. What on earth is the Devil o' the highlands Footrace (for those that don't already know)
    2. What Jo's experience of training has been like since she started working with me
    3. What my approach has been
    4. How her race day unfolded

  • Bonus post holiday musings
    Apr 25 2025

Hello everyone, and that is me back to normality again with a big block of training in front of me till the Ultra Scotland 100 at the beginning of June.

No guest this week, but don't let that put you off, as I muse about some topics:

    1. Training while on holiday
    2. The new kit I have bought
    3. Thoughts on failure
    4. A study on protein intake guidelines (Study link here: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s40279-025-02203-8 )
    5. What is a taper, and how should you go about it for your next big race

  • The Jason McGinn Episode
    Apr 18 2025

Back to Ayrshire this week for a conversation with Jason McGinn.

You will have heard about him and some of the adventures and charity challenges that he has done in a previous episode with Ricky (S3E3) and now we hear from the man himself.

    • The early days, from football to Mauy Thai to running in lockdown
    • Connecting with charities and setting big challenges and having big days (and weeks) out with friends
    • Finding what worked for him by trial and error
    • His work with the mental health charity Back Onside
    • What he looks for when seeking adventure
    • and much much more

    The Hot Takes:

    1. Get in with the right crown, they will help support and lift you up
    2. Connect with something bigger than yourself
    3. The power of impermanance, nothing will last forever...and that is a good thing

  • The Matt and Ellie Green Episode
    Apr 11 2025

This podcast is all about sharing stories from grand adventures to the triumphs (and struggles) of normal people being able to do amazing things and running ultras.

Summit Fever Media is all about sharing peoples stories - some of the most inspiring and downright cool documentaries has been produced by them so jin me as I talk to Matt and Ellie Green about their journey from starting the company through to ts current form.

    We talked about:

    • Where the idea for starting Summit Fever Media came from
    • How the company pivoted and focused through COVID to its core value of storytelling
    • Matt and Ellie's favourite adventure
    • Sustainability and what they think about when filming
    • and much much more

    The Hot Takes:

    1. You aren't going to get the opportunities if you don't put yourself out there
    2. It's all about the stories and finding a connection with the characters
    3. How to think about being more sustainable without having to be perfect

  • The Ricky Weatherston Episode
    Apr 4 2025

You asked and I delivered. A number of you have mentioned to me that Ricky would be a great guest and you were absolutely right.

Known for wearing a pick wig during races (more about that story in the episode) he has done so much more and has a fascinating story to tell. Here are some of the things we spoke about:

    • The early days in fitness, from boxing to Muay Thai
    • How he found his way into running, from parkrun to BootCamp to longer events
    • He uses running as a way of having adventures with different people
    • The support and encouragement that he gives to others - very inspirational
    • Of course, where the pink wigs came from comes into the conversation

    The Hot Takes:

    1. How to use running to find your tribe
    2. Don't take it too seriously - it is all about having fun!
    3. Create boundaries so that you can give your best to the things that matter

    Let's Connect

    • You can follow Ricky on Instagram @x3rkw and of course you will be able to see his awesome adventure pictures on the FADs and FAMs pages too

  • The Nicky Merrett Episode
    Mar 28 2025

During my Tea Round a couple of weeks ago I bumped into this rather chatty lady at the top of Robinson (pretty sure she was trying to beat us to the top). We then had a fun conversation about quite a few things - voom bars, poles and some of the hills we were going to climb that day (sorry it was in the lakes - Fells)

It was a little while later that I realised I had been talking to a bit of a lakes legend and someone I had heard about in various online groups, including a poles course the day after the Tea Round.

Join me as I have a fun and energy-filled conversation with Nicky where we talk about:

    • How she moved from the corporate life to a calling in the fells
    • The way that she built her business around an outdoor lifestyle
    • The fun challenges that she has planned over the next couple of years and so much more
    • Here are the discount codes we talked about:
    • For 20% off Silva: HIKING-HIGHS-SILVA-20
    • For 20% off Voom (my fave) HIKING-HIGHS-VOOM-20
    • For Leki: 10%, but you will need to contact Nicky, and she will sort you out and offer lots of advice on sizing, fit, etc.

    The Hot Takes:

    1. Are you just going through the motions in life, doing what you (and others) think you should do rather than what you want (or need) to do?
    2. Take a minute and pause to see where you get your energy from
    3. How can we be more present and 'at one' with the outdoors and nature - not as hippy/woowoo as it might sound

  • The Andy Blow Episode
    Mar 21 2025

As we kick off season 3 I am joined by CEO and Founder of Precision Fuel and Hydration, Andy Blow.

Andy became an accomplished triathlete but struggled when it came to racing in the heat - and here is where the story of Precision Fuel and Hydration begins.

    We talked about:

    • How Andy's personal experience led to the formation of the company
    • How PF&H has evolved and how it has helped athletes in their race and training strategies
    • What might be next in the world of hydration and fuelling
    • What tools are on the PF&H website and how can you use them to tailor your fuelling and hydration

    The Hot Takes:

    1. It is all about individualisation! Everyone is unique in their fluid, salt and carbohydrate intake needs so the strategy also must be unique to you
    2. There's not going to be a new nutrient found so the advances will be on how to manage (and carry) hydration and fuel
    3. Think about life balance with a wider lens - not just day to day or week to week but annually so that you can spend time on the things that matter

    Let's Connect

    • You can follow Precision on Instagram @prescisionfandh and at their website: https://www.precisionhydration.com/

  • Jack, Josh and all things bicarb
    Feb 28 2025

For the first time, I am joined by two guests. Jack Gray and Josh Elston-Carr. Saying they are accomplished club runners is an understatement as they have represented their country but that's not the reason they are on the show...

Looking at what is happening on the running scene there are two things that I think are contributing to records being broken all over the place, high-carb fuelling, helping performances and recovery and the use of sodium bicarbonate - and so to Jack and Josh...

Last year they founded Bi(Carr)b, an innovative and affordable sports supplement that helps athletes reach their full potential by harnessing the lactic acid buffering power of bicarbonate of soda. Their deep understanding of middle-distance and endurance running has shaped every decision in the development of Bi(Carr)b and helped them to spot a gap in the market. They knew there had to be a better, more accessible way to harness the lactic acid-buffering power of bicarbonate of soda and today we share their story.

If you do want to try Bi(Carr)b then I squared away a cheeky little discount code for you, active till the 7th of March at midnight, you can get 10% off using code ULTRA10

    We talked about:

    • Their early years in running and how they progressed to impressive performances and international appearances
    • The story behind Bi(Carr)b, early successes and what the future holds
    • The proof is in the pudding - it simply works for the athletes that take the product
    • A bit of a deep dive into how the product works (with some sciency stuff),
    • Top tips for using it and how it can (and has) been applied at the ultra distances

    The Hot Takes:

    1. Using yourself as the science experiment and seeing what works
    2. It's easy to feel like you are in balance if you are doing something that you love
    3. The very best athletes are the ones that can do things in moderation
