    Aug 13 2025
Mercury Fillings vs. White Fillings: What’s Really Better for Your Health and Smile?

Have you ever opened your mouth wide and noticed a silver glint in the back? Or maybe your dentist asked if you preferred a silver or white filling—and you weren’t sure which to choose? Today on The Wonder Tooth, we’re diving into one of the most debated topics in dentistry: silver amalgam vs. white composite fillings. What are they made of? How do they perform? And do they really affect your body differently? Let's get into the facts, myths, and science behind these two popular dental materials.

    WHAT ARE MERCURY (AMALGAM) FILLINGS?

    Definition:

Silver fillings, or amalgam fillings, have been used in dentistry for over 150 years. They’re made from a mixture of metals, including:

    1. Mercury (around 50%)
    2. Silver
    3. Tin
    4. Copper
    5. Zinc (sometimes)

The mercury binds the metals together and creates a hard, durable material once set.

    ✅ PROS OF SILVER FILLINGS
    1. Durability and Longevity
    2. Lasts 10–15 years, sometimes longer.
    3. Withstands strong chewing forces, ideal for molars.
    4. Cost-Effective
    5. Generally more affordable than composite fillings.
    6. Quick Placement
    7. Less technique-sensitive.
    8. Easier to place in areas with limited access or moisture.
    9. Bacteriostatic Properties
    10. Some studies suggest amalgam fillings may inhibit bacterial growth under the filling.

    ❌ CONS OF SILVER FILLINGS
    1. Aesthetic Concerns
    2. Very noticeable, especially when laughing or speaking.
    3. Not suitable for front teeth or visible areas.
    4. Cracks and Fractures
    5. Metal expands and contracts with temperature changes, which can lead to tooth fractures over time.
    6. May weaken the remaining tooth structure.
    7. Mercury Content and Health Concerns
    8. Contains elemental mercury, which is toxic in large amounts.
    9. The ADA and FDA state that amalgam is safe for most people, but some health-conscious patients and holistic providers prefer to avoid it.
    10. Mercury exposure risk is higher during placement or removal—not while intact.

The Truth About Your Dental Health and Diet
    What No One’s Telling You

By Dr. Radwa Saad | Cosmetic Dentist & Host of The Wonder Tooth Podcast and founder of Dent Blanche Dental

You can brush, floss, and rinse all you want—but if your diet isn’t right, your smile may still suffer.

Learn how your everyday diet affects your teeth and gums. Dr. Radwa Saad shares surprising facts, common food mistakes, and top smile-friendly choices.

Many people don’t realize their eating habits are slowly wearing down their enamel, inflaming their gums, and feeding harmful bacteria—all without them even knowing.

Here are the top dietary truths every smile-conscious person should know:

6 “Healthy” Habits That Secretly Harm Your Teeth

    1. Lemon Water All Day – Acidic and erosive. Drink it fast, not over hours. Use a straw.

    2. Dried Fruits & Trail Mix – Sticky and sugary. Feed cavity-causing bacteria.

    3. Smoothies – High in natural sugars and acids. Drink quickly and rinse after.

    4. Coffee with Sugar or Milk – Sipping constantly erodes enamel and stains teeth.

    5. Keto or High-Protein Diets– Can cause dry mouth and “keto breath.” Stay hydrated.

    6. Chewing Ice – Leads to microfractures and sensitivity.

    Smile-Boosting Foods to Add

    - Cheese & Yogurt – Strengthen enamel with calcium and casein

    - Crunchy Veggies – Scrub teeth naturally, stimulate saliva

    - Green Tea – Reduces inflammation, fights bacteria

    - Strawberries – Natural brighteners, high in vitamin C

    - Nuts & Seeds– Good fats and minerals

    - Mineral-Rich Water – Supports tooth structure, unlike distilled water

    3 Pro Tips for a Smile-Smart Diet

    1. Time Your Eating – Avoid all-day grazing. Let saliva restore balance.

    2. Wait Before Brushing After Acidic Foods – Rinse first, then brush after 30 mins.

    3. Watch for Tongue Clues – Burning, coating, or soreness might be nutrition-related.

    Final Thought

Your mouth is a reflection of your diet. Choosing the right foods—and eating them the right way—can strengthen, whiten, and protect your smile long-term.

What Your Tongue Says About Your Health
    Secrets Hiding in Plain Sight

Your tongue is one of the most underrated tools in your body’s health toolkit.

Did you know your tongue can reveal early signs of disease, vitamin deficiencies, or oral health issues? Dr. Radwa Saad breaks down 8 tongue clues you need to know.

It can reveal issues with your nutrition, immune system, hydration, and more—*before* you ever feel sick. As a dentist, I check the tongue at every appointment because it often shows me what your body is trying to say.

Here are 8 tongue signs you should never ignore:

    1. White Coating

    Could mean:

    - Oral thrush (yeast/fungal infection)

    - Dehydration

    - Poor oral hygiene

Common in those on antibiotics, with dry mouth, or diabetes.

    2. Bright Red or Smooth Tongue

    Often caused by:

    - Vitamin B12 or folate deficiency

    - Iron deficiency

It may look “bald” if papillae (tiny bumps) are lost. Can also feel sore.

    3. Geographic Tongue

Red, map-like patches that move around.

Usually harmless, but can flare with stress, hormones, or spicy foods. If painful, talk to your dentist.

    4. Black Hairy Tongue

A buildup of dead skin, bacteria, or yeast that stains the tongue.

    Caused by:

    - Smoking

    - Antibiotics

    - Poor oral hygiene

    - Excessive coffee/mouthwash

    5. Scalloped or Wavy Edges

If your tongue has indentations or “tooth prints,” it might be:

    - Swollen from clenching or grinding

    - Linked to sleep apnea or airway issues

    6. Persistent Ulcers or Sores

Any sore that doesn’t heal in 10–14 days should be checked.

    Could be:

    - Trauma (biting tongue)

    - Autoimmune disease

    - Oral cancer (especially if hard or painless)

    7. Pale or Purple Tongue

Pale = possible anemia or poor circulation

Purple or bluish = sluggish blood flow, chronic conditions

    8. Bad Taste or Metallic Sensation

    Could be:

    - Infection

    - Medication side effect

    - Old metal fillings

    Tongue Care Tips

    - Use a tongue scraper or brush daily

    - Stay hydrated

    - Eat vitamin-rich foods (especially B12, iron, and zinc)

    - Get regular oral cancer screenings

    When to See a Dentist

    If you notice:

    - A sore or patch that doesn't go away

    - Changes in color or shape

    - Pain or burning

Book a scan or oral health check at Dent Blanche Dental in Princeton, NJ.

  • #88: Avoid These Mistakes During Your Dental Checkup
    Jul 16 2025
Avoid These Mistakes During Your Dental Checkup

    What Most People Get Wrong

Dental checkups are one of the best tools for protecting your smile and your overall health. But many people unknowingly sabotage their own appointments—missing opportunities to prevent major issues, ask key questions, and save money.

Dr. Radwa Saad shares the 7 biggest mistakes people make at their dental checkup—and what to do instead. Don't waste your visit. Learn how to get the most from every appointment.

Here are the most common mistakes patients make—and how to avoid them.

    1. Not Updating Your Health History

Your dentist isn’t just checking your teeth—they’re assessing your whole health. Medications, blood pressure changes, recent surgeries or diagnoses (like diabetes or autoimmune conditions) can all impact your oral care and treatment planning.

    2. Downplaying Tooth Sensitivity or Discomfort

A little “zing” or discomfort when chewing might be early signs of a cracked tooth, cavity, or nerve inflammation. Tell your dentist—early intervention is easier and less expensive.

    3. Over-Brushing Right Before the Appointment

Trying to impress your hygienist? Don't overdo it. Brushing too hard can irritate gums and hide signs of inflammation that we need to catch. Just brush normally and be yourself.

    4. Skipping X-Rays

Digital X-rays reveal what we can’t see with the naked eye—early decay, infections, bone loss, even tumors. Avoiding X-rays could mean missing problems until they’re painful or expensive to fix.

    5. Not Speaking Up or Asking Questions

Don’t be afraid to ask about:

    - Sensitivity

    - Tooth alignment or grinding

    - Whitening options

    - Preventive tools you can use at home

Dentists want to educate you—not just treat you.

    6. Ignoring Bleeding Gums or Recession

Bleeding gums are not normal. They’re an early sign of gingivitis or gum disease. Receding gums may point to brushing trauma, grinding, or bone loss. Bring it up!

    7. Leaving Without a Treatment Plan

    Always ask:

    - What’s next?

    - What’s optional vs. necessary?

    - Do I need to come back in 3 or 6 months?

A clear plan = peace of mind + prevention.

One Smart Question Most People Forget to Ask

“Is there anything I can do now to prevent future treatment?”

This powerful question can uncover early warning signs and give you action steps to protect your smile before problems grow.

    Final Thoughts

Your dental checkup is a chance to learn, prevent, and protect your smile—not just “get it over with.”

At Dent Blanche Dental, we personalize every visit with digital diagnostics, wellness education, and a luxury experience. If you’re ready for a smarter, more beautiful smile—book with us today.

  • #87: Why Your Smile Could Be Aging You: Fixes That Actually Work
    Jul 9 2025
Why Your Smile Could Be Aging You – And Fixes That Actually Work

When you think of aging, you probably picture wrinkles, sagging skin, or gray hair.

But did you know your smile might be giving away your age—*or even making you look older than you are?

Discover why your smile might be aging you and the cosmetic dental solutions that can take years off your appearance, from Dr. Radwa Saad of Dent Blanche Dental.

Your teeth play a huge role in your overall facial appearance. As we age, they change—becoming shorter, darker, more crowded, or even shifting altogether. But the good news? Dentistry has evolved, and now we can reverse these effects with beautiful, natural-looking results.

7 Ways Your Smile Might Be Aging You:

    1. Yellow or Discolored Teeth

Over time, enamel wears down and stains build up. This dulls your smile and adds years to your look.

    2. Short, Worn Teeth

Grinding or enamel erosion leads to shorter teeth—and a collapsed bite that causes wrinkles around the mouth.

    3. Gummy Smile or Uneven Gum Line

Gums that cover too much of your teeth or are asymmetrical can make your smile look awkward or childlike.

    4. Missing Teeth or Gaps

Not only does this affect function—it leads to sagging cheeks and jaw shrinkage.

    5. Crooked or Crowded Teeth

Misaligned teeth create shadows and distort your facial balance.

    6. Chipped or Cracked Teeth

These are signs of aging, wear, or trauma—and they make your smile appear neglected.

    7. Old Metal Fillings or Crowns

Visible metal or discolored dental work can immediately date your appearance.

Smile Rejuvenation Solutions That Actually Work:

    ✅ **In-Office Teeth Whitening**

Brightens your smile in under an hour.

✅ **Porcelain Veneers or Composite Bonding**

Instantly lengthens teeth, hides flaws, and boosts symmetry.

    ✅ **Gum Contouring**

Fixes “gummy” smiles or uneven lines with quick recovery.

✅ **Clear Aligners (SureSmile or Invisalign)**

Straighten teeth discreetly while preserving facial structure.

    ✅ **Implants or Dental Bridges**

Restore missing teeth and maintain jaw volume.

    ✅ **Digital Smile Design**

A full facial analysis + 3D preview of your future smile—personalized and precise.

    Final Thoughts

Your smile is the frame of your face. Don’t let it age you.

Modern dentistry gives us the power to reverse the clock—beautifully and naturally.

  • #86: How to Spot Dental Issues Before It’s Too Late
    Jul 2 2025
10 warning signs your mouth might be begging you not to ignore

What Your Mouth is Trying to Tell You!

Your mouth is full of secrets—and not all of them are good.

Learn how to spot the early signs of dental problems before it’s too late. Dr. Radwa Saad shares expert tips on what your mouth is trying to tell you.

Most people think that if they’re not in pain, their teeth are fine. But the truth is, dental problems are often silent in the beginning and only scream for attention when it's too late.

Here are the **10 warning signs your mouth might be begging you not to ignore**:

    1. Bleeding Gums

Bleeding when you brush or floss is never normal. It usually means inflammation—possibly gingivitis or the early stages of gum disease. Left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss and even systemic inflammation linked to heart disease.

    2. Bad Breath That Won’t Go Away

Chronic halitosis isn’t just embarrassing—it may be a red flag. Often caused by bacteria in gum pockets, decaying teeth, or infections. Don’t just cover it with mints—get it checked.

    3. Tooth Sensitivity

If hot coffee or cold water makes you wince, your enamel might be thinning, or you could have cavities, gum recession, or grinding damage.

    4. White or Brown Spots on Teeth

These could be early signs of tooth decay or enamel demineralization—especially in kids and teens. Early intervention can reverse the damage.

    5. Sores That Don’t Heal

Mouth ulcers that don’t go away within 10-14 days should never be ignored. They might be signs of infections, autoimmune issues, or even oral cancer.

    6. Loose Teeth or Shifting

If your teeth feel loose or you’re suddenly getting gaps—your bone support may be breaking down. This is a late-stage sign of gum disease.

    7. Jaw Pain or Clicking

A clicking jaw or facial tension could mean TMJ disorder, bite misalignment, or nighttime grinding. This can lead to headaches, neck pain, and enamel wear.

    8. Dry Mouth

Saliva is nature’s defense against decay. If you constantly feel dry, your cavity risk skyrockets. It could be due to meds, dehydration, or underlying issues.

    9. Tongue Changes

A healthy tongue is pink and bumpy. White coating? Could be fungal. Red and shiny? Might be a deficiency. Black and hairy? Bacteria overload. Your tongue is a powerful diagnostic tool.

    10. Persistent Bad Taste

If you notice a metallic or foul taste that lingers, it might mean an abscess, leaking filling, or untreated decay.

    What You Can Do

    - Check your mouth in the mirror once a month.

    - Don’t skip your 6-month cleanings.

    - See a dentist immediately if something feels “off.”

    - At Dent Blanche Dental, we use digital scans to catch issues early—with no gooey impressions and no guesswork.

    Final Thoughts

Remember: Prevention is cheaper, easier, and far less painful than treatment.
