  • You're Not Crazy: How Society Gaslights Women's Pain and Illness
    Apr 3 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

Why are women so often told their pain is “just stress,” “just anxiety,” or “all in their head”?

In this episode of The Hint Hive: Amplifying Women’s Voices, host Kelly Hint — psychotherapist, feminist life coach, and Queen Bee of the Hive — dives into the very real phenomenon of medical gaslighting and how society dismisses, minimizes, and misinterprets women’s pain and illness.

For decades, research has shown that women’s symptoms are more likely to be ignored, misdiagnosed, or attributed to emotional causes rather than legitimate medical concerns. Women experiencing heart attacks are more likely to be misdiagnosed, women are often given sedatives instead of pain medication, and conditions like endometriosis, lupus, fibromyalgia, autoimmune disease, and chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) can take years — sometimes decades — to diagnose.

This isn’t just a medical issue.

It’s a cultural and systemic problem rooted in gender bias in healthcare.

    In this episode, Kelly explores:

    • What medical gaslighting is and why it happens

    • The psychological impact of not being believed about pain and illness

    • The history of women being labeled “hysterical” in medicine

    • Why women often face longer diagnosis timelines for chronic illness

    • How gender bias in medical research affects treatment today

    • The emotional toll of being told your symptoms are “all in your head”

Kelly also shares her own experiences navigating the healthcare system and the long road to receiving a lupus diagnosis, along with insights from her work as a psychotherapist supporting women who have experienced medical trauma and dismissal.

Most importantly, this episode provides practical strategies to help women advocate for themselves in medical settings, including:

✔ How to document symptoms effectively

✔ Questions to ask doctors to avoid dismissal

✔ When and how to seek second opinions

✔ Ways to rebuild trust in your own body and intuition

As always, the episode ends with the Hint Hive Affirmation of the Week, a powerful reminder that yo
