  • Scott Strode: Rise Recover Thrive
    May 13 2025

    Send us a text

#32: This week on Rise, Recover, Live, Liz and Bryce The Third welcome back Scott Strode, Founder and Executive Director of The Phoenix, for a long-awaited conversation.

Since his last appearance on the show, a lot has changed—most notably, Scott has written and published his first book. In Rise. Recover. Thrive. he opens up about the cathartic, sometimes scary, and emotional process of translating his personal journey into recovery onto paper, while spotlighting the work of The Phoenix movement.

Through the writing process, Scott reflects on what makes The Movement so powerful: the belief that those seen as "the problem" in society are actually the solution. By focusing on the strength in people and treating folks with dignity, we can all thrive and even reach back a hand to help those behind us.

Now, nearly two decades since founding The Phoenix, Scott seeks to memorialize the ethos of this work. Even if The Phoenix isn't the one to ultimately transform how our society approaches addiction, the ideas can inform those who come after, aiding them in carrying the movement even further.

Tune in to hear Scott's wisdom as we discuss what first inspired him to start this work, how that motivation has changed, and why thriving—no matter how distant it may seem—remains the goal, and much more.

Learn more about Scott at www.scottstrode.com, and find his book at www.scottstrode.com/book or wherever books are sold.

  • The Mentor Hunt: Confusing, Critical, and (Apparently) Optional if You’re Liz
    Apr 29 2025

    Send us a text

#30: This week on Rise, Recover, Live, Liz and Bryce The Third sink back into the couch for a real one on mentorship—why we chase it, when we need it, and when it might actually be okay to skip it.

For Bryce, mentorship has been non-negotiable. Whether it’s recovery, business, or just becoming a better human, he sees guidance as a lifeline. Liz? Not so much. She’s in a season of radical self-trust, choosing her own tools, her own path, and walking away from anything (or anyone) that doesn’t fit.

Together, they unpack what it means to seek wisdom without outsourcing your worth. It’s a convo about mentors, chosen fam, and how to keep the relationships that really see you.

Spoiler: Sometimes the best mentor is the version of you that finally says, “Nah, I’m good.”

  • Rebuilding Confidence in Early Recovery: A Conversation with Bryce The Third
    Apr 22 2025

    Send us a text

#29: Bryce The Third returns this week to reconnect with our podcast community and respond to questions from our listeners. One powerful question comes from Jim in New Jersey: "After a life of addiction, how do I rebuild my confidence?"

While Bryce reminds us he's no expert, except in his own experience, he offers honest insight into what helped him regain confidence during his early recovery and beyond.

Although it can feel overwhelming and like there is much to make amends for, Bryce reminds us that making reparations doesn't happen all at once. The first step is supporting your wellbeing and building that solid foundation of support. Now in his 12th year of recovery, Bryce shares that overtime he's learned that we have no control over how others perceive us. We can only control how we show up for ourselves and the folks around us.

For Bryce, confidence has come from consistently working on doing better for himself and his community. Tune in as Bryce opens up about the challenges in early recovery, the lessons he's learned over the years, and how he's rebuilt his confidence.

  • Calli Nguyen on Sobriety in Your 20s, Losing Loved Ones To Addiction and Showing Up REAL on TikTok
    Apr 15 2025

#28: This week, Liz and Bryce The Third sit down with Calli Nguyen (she/her) — a 24 year old first-generation graduate student and full-time content creator. In addition to recently earning her Master’s in Health Administration, Calli pursues a variety of creative endeavors as an influencer, actor, model, entrepreneur, and passionate mental health advocate.

At the heart of everything she does is a clear mission: to create meaningful impact. Through personal reflection, Calli realized two key aspects of her purpose: first, that she wants to be a strong and proud representation for the AAIP (Asian American and Indigenous Pacific Islander) community and all underrepresented groups; and second, that she wants to reach a wide audience, lending her voice and amplifying other's who need it.

As a person in recovery from alcoholism and self-harm, Calli blends her lived experience with her knowledge of healthcare medicine and her skills at content creation to connect with folks far and wide.

Tune in to hear Calli's story — from losing herself during active addiction to finding her way back to healing and community. We dive into everything from navigating early recovery and the tools she uses, to the unexpected challenges she faced with social media after getting sober.

To learn more about Calli, find her on Tik Tok at www.tiktok.com/@calli_nguyen?lang=en and follow her on Instagram www.instagram.com/calli_nguyen.

  • Recovery Doesn’t Mean the Feelings Disappear: Perseverance and “feeling it all” in recovery and beyond
    Apr 8 2025

    Send us a text

#27: Liz and Bryce The Third are back this week for a deeply personal and meaningful conversation, exploring topics like the human condition, perseverance, and cravings. Liz opens up about her lifelong battle with anxiety and the "Sunday Scaries," a struggle that dates back to her childhood. For Bryce, similar emotions were tied to the physical toll of his manual labor job during his active addiction.

Together, Bryce and Liz share thoughts they've had on the human condition — the worst-case scenarios we imagine when we feel trapped and dissatisfied. Bryce shares his journey in recovery to pay off his daunting credit card debt and the fear of never seeing the end. But through reflecting on that struggle, he discovered that the true reward isn't just the accomplishment, but the work itself. It's the discomfort and struggle that fuel growth.

Tune in as Bryce and Liz discuss the power of recognizing and sitting with cravings, finding balance between financial stability and creative freedom — all while embracing the discomfort that leads to personal growth.

  • Kaley Jones: A Leap of Faith
    Apr 1 2025

    Send us a text

#26: At 19, Kaley Jones (she/her) found herself at a crossroads: one path led her to Mexico, where she could continue a life gripped by substance use disorder and dangerous circumstances; the other was the long, daunting journey toward sobriety — a journey that felt not only impossible, but one she didn't think she wanted.

Over 10 years later, Kaley now believes that choosing sobriety was the key to stepping into the fullest version of herself. Though it's been tough work, even grueling at times, she's reclaimed the life she once thought she wasn't worthy of. She's incredibly grateful she listened to her loved ones and took that leap of faith. In the episode, we dive into Kaley's story and much more:

    • Her full-circle realization: Now, Kaley works with individuals the same age she was when she first got sober, showing them that recovery is possible... and she's living proof.
    • Her definition of recovery as her relationships she's cultivated within a community that loves and supports her.
    • The power of intervention, and the conversations she had with her family at 19.
    • Kaley's first introduction to The Phoenix, and how she doubted hr ability to live a thriving life in sobriety, until she met someone wearing a "sober" shirt at a 12-step meeting.

Learn more about Kaley's story on the Stand Together Podcast.

  • Vulnerability Hangovers: A Couch Conversation with Liz & Bryce The Third
    Mar 25 2025

    Send us a text

#25: This week, Liz and Bryce The Third return for another 'couch conversation' — those intimate, casual chats that naturally happen when you're with someone you know and trust. Now, a couple hundred episodes in, they reflect on how much the show has evolved and how their friendship has grown along the way.

Liz opens up about her discomfort with couch conversations. She shares that she's often hesitant to take up space talking about herself and her recovery, only wanting to share when she knows her words will be of service. Yet, it's conversations like these that allow Liz to feel truly seen, a feeling she's had to work through over time. Despite the discomfort and a potential for rejection, there is value in showing up fully as yourself. Liz emphasizes that it is those moments and conversations where true connection and healing happen.

Tune in to hear from Bryce The Third and Liz as they explore the power of sharing and vulnerability and how these moments deepen relationships and remind us that were are never truly alone.
