  • Getting Punched in the Face: The Training Cops Need
    Jan 13 2026

In this episode, we sit down with two seasoned peace officers and defensive tactics trainers who are not afraid to be honest about their own journey. One of them openly admits that early in his career he was tool dependent-relying too quickly on weapons instead of skill. Together, we dive into the uncomfortable truth behind overreacting to physical aggression and why some officers escalate to using higher levels of force when confronted with assaultive behavior.

The instructors explain how a lack of hands-on training leads to more force, not less, and why proper defensive tactics-and the confidence to use them-are critical to minimizing injuries to the public. We explore the idea that officers must get "comfortable with the uncomfortable," including learning how to take a punch, manage stress and stay composed under pressure.

The conversation also highlights the responsibility of instructors: real training requires real proficiency, patience and the ability to build confidence over time. This episode unpacks what effective training looks like, how to create resilient officers, and why better instruction leads to better outcomes on the street.
