  • Nina
    Oct 3 2025

Welcome back to this weeks episode of One For The Road. I am starting the season off with the lovely Nina. Nina grew up between Hong Kong and London in what felt like a happy family life. It wasn’t until she returned to Hong Kong after boarding school that she became aware of her mother’s drinking, which had started to escalate. Her teenage years were turbulent, marked by her parents’ divorce and the beginning of her own drinking journey. Boarding school offered comfort and structure, but being away from home also gave her greater freedom to drink.

After travelling, Nina went on to university before living and working in London, where the workplace drinking culture was strong. Following a breakup at 29, she found herself living alone, and her drinking increased significantly.Life took a turn when she met her husband, who lived abroad, and together they eventually settled in London. Motherhood brought both joy and deep challenges — including the heartbreak of losing a child and the isolation of COVID — all against the backdrop of “mummy wine time” culture.

When perimenopause began last year, Nina noticed how alcohol was worsening her hangovers and fuelling crippling anxiety. In January, she decided to stop drinking, and since then her life has transformed. Today, she describes herself as calmer, more joyful, open to new experiences, and truly in love with her sober life.

  • Annie Knowles
    Aug 22 2025

This week on One For The Road I am joined by Annie Knowles who is a certified sobriety, confidence, and life coach who helps busy women, especially those in healthcare and public services, rethink their relationship with alcohol, without pressure or shame. After more than 33 years working in the NHS, Annie experienced post-pandemic burnout and decided in 2021 to step away from alcohol. That decision changed everything. Her coaching brand, Sober Rainbow Rider, was inspired by the pandemic rainbows and the spirit of cheering each other on from our doorsteps. That same spirit runs through her work today, encouraging clients to find their own ‘pot of gold’ on the other side of alcohol. Now alcohol-free for over three years, Annie supports others through the ups and downs of midlife, burnout recovery, and navigating stress without relying on a glass to unwind. She co-hosts the Blue Light Emergency Services and NHS Live Alcohol Experiment, and she collaborates with the NHS drug and alcohol services to deliver alcohol awareness talks to medical professionals, introducing grey area drinking. She works one-on-one and in groups to guide clients toward greater balance, calm, and clarity.

  • Kate Annetts
    Aug 1 2025

On this weeks episode of One For The Road I am joined by Kate Annetts who is a journalist, disability rights advocate and community engagement facilitator who lives in Brighton. In her early 20s Kate was partying hard every weekend and some weeknights when her physical health began to decline. She appeared drunk even when she wasn't (although she admits that wasn't often). It took seven years for her to be diagnosed with friedreich's ataxia, by which time her mental health was much worse and as a result she was self-medicating daily with alcohol. Kate is just coming up to two years sober and in that time she has completed a masters degree in journalism. Her physical and mental health have improved more than she could ever have imagined.

A former teacher, coach, and consultant, Sarah brings deep expertise in psychology and education to her mission of creating spaces where people feel seen, supported, and unashamed. Through coaching and training, she opens up vital conversations that empower people to thrive without alcohol.Sarah holds an MSc in Positive Psychology and Coaching Psychology, with research centred on the lack of shame-awareness in education systems. Her work is rooted in the belief that shame resilience is a foundational skill—not just for students and teachers, but for anyone navigating life, especially those choosing to live alcohol-free.
